General anesthesia

Iv got my surgery coming up in a couple weeks with Dr Rosner. The thing that scares me more than anything is the anesthesia. I am super sensitive to drugs, I will have nearly violent adverse reactions to even the lowest doses. I cannot even take aspirin. Benzodiazepines are out of the question. What is the gentlest anesthesia?  I know people always say be sure to tell your doctor about your sensitivities, but in my case it doesn't do any good because most doctors cannot appreciate the unusual sensitivities that I have.

Hi...the Beighton Score is one test for hyper mobility...but they should be looking at your skin and eyes and look into your medical history to see if you have any hernia's, slow to heal, easy to bruise...etc....

Thanks Selma. Are there any specific EDS tests I should ask for?

I could not move my joints like that either....and never would have considered to have it looking at those pics of the hyper mobile joints....BUT, I was DX'd with it....so do not let your own idea of what EDS is keep you from looking further into it as it can affect how you feel and heal with surgery.....

The med issue is deff a EDS thing....I had surgery on my ankle and a few months later on my knee...well the meds used for the first one were also given for the 2nd but now I am allergic to it???weird I know...but it is how EDS seems to work. My Drs will not give me a med once I have had an issue with it....so I hope it does not continue to happen should I need more surgeries....

Hi Annie,

Thank you for your reply. How did you feel upon waking? Iv heard of people waking up in total psychosis or in severe anxiety. I am anxiety prone anyways so this is a big worry.

Hi Selma,

Dont know if I have EDS. I cannot bend my joints like I see in the photos but my neck and joints pop and crack, also my neck feel very loose. My left hand is more flexible than the right.
I am going to have EDS checked. My med sensitives are strange. I can tolerate a medicine one week, then a couple weeks later it will nearly kill me--then sometime later I find I can tolerate it again...

Hi, I'm sure you are in good hands with your dr and anesthesiologist. Just make sure you speak with them ahead of time about your concerns and your sensitivities. I was just released from the hospital from my Chiari surgery and that was a big concern of mine too. They had assigned me an anesthesiologist that specialized in patients like me. You will be well taken care of, just please ask as many questions as you can before, even make a list to take with and let him know your past reactions. Now a days there are so many different types of anesthesia they can use. May I ask what surgery you are having ? It it for Chiari ? Also how long did they say you would be under? My surgery lasted over six hours, not including the hours in pre op etc.

Hi.....do you have EDS? Many of us with EDS not only have issues with anesthesia but with pain meds as well....so I do understand and I also had issues with being intubated....I spoke with my anesthesiologist and he was great and said he would use the smallest tubes possible and I did not have the same issues as I had during a different surgery....so, it is possible to speak with them and let them know what is going on with you, and it is in their best interest to know about these issues ahead of time.

If your Dr knows about these issues he should take precautions and let your anesthesiologist know...so if he shows no interest in sharing the info, I would be sure to look into it myself....
