I have severe scoliosis and now SYRINX

Hey everyone, so a little bit of my background. I am single 25 year mother of an amazing 4 yr old Mikey. I have had scoliosis since i was 12 and when I say it has never bothered me I mean truly I have never had back pain from my scoliosis. On december 01, 2008 I was crossing a street and a man drove through a stop sign and hit me and a friend. Ever since that day my back has been hurting me so much. I strated going to physio through my lawyers advice and found that i was in more pain by trying to releive my pain. Then i started getting numbness in my right arm ( the side i was hit on ) and in my feet. My neck started to really really hurt along with my back. I asked my family doc to send me to the orthopedic surgeon i have seen for many years. i explain to him my pain and he says before he recommends scoliosis surgery he wants to see why my arm and feet are causing this pain and numbness. he said that scoliosis has nothign to do with this. they do three MRI and i have a extensive syrinx ( i dont have the papers to say where it is , I believe it is in two spots) . So the insurance for the accident says that all my pain is from my scoliosis but i know for sure that it is not! I am working and can hardly do the things i used to do with no pain. it is getting only worse and I want to know can it be that it was from the accident or is it only from my scoliosis. No doctor will sit there and say ya its from the car accident but i Know for a fact i never have had any pain like this for so many years and not the littlest thing hurts me. I feel strongly that it from this man hitting me.

I'm sorry to hear that you have got such a fight ahead of you...it is really not fair!

I too, have heard that a syrinx can be acquired from an accident..I am wondering why the DRs don't know this? What they should be concerned with is not whether it's the scoliosis or not... but the fact that you did NOT have this pain before. That should be easy to prove by your dr's records from before the accident.

I don't have a syrinx either..but have all that you describe just from Chiari...

I really hate to hear about people getting the run around...I hope you find the right DR one that will say that the accident caused the syrinx. Good luck!

No I never had a MRI before because I never had any pain and did like getting tests done unless their was a reason to. I did not have this pain until after I was hit by the car and the pain I am havnig now did not start until about 2 months ago. After I was hit by the car my legs and back hurt and i got really bad migraines but anyone would by the impact of a car. Now the pain is differnet and getting worse day by day. I know it was from the car its just proving it is alot harder then people think. all they do is blame my scoliosis which is really annoying because my scoliosis never has bothered me. Not even in labour with my son did my back hurt me once. doctors were always amazed by me !

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I am so sorry u r going thru all this....my question is did u have a MRI of ur back prior to the accident? If so, it would show that u didn't have a syrinx then. Syringomyelia can be congenital or acquired....ur's sounds like it is acquired.

I do not have a syrinx, but from what I hear from those that do, the pain u mentioned can be caused by the syrinx if it is impeding on some nerves.....
