Juts a question

Can an ear infection be due to Chiari?  Im like 37 yrs old an havent had an ear infection since I was like 3 years old. I dont swim under water cause if I get water in my ears I get dizzy. I just thought Id ask. The dr said I had alot of air bubbles in my left ear and every time I bend over to pick something up I get pain and it feel like theres something in my ear. I hope I dont sound silly for asking this but I was shocked I had one. Im on an anitbiotic and nasal spray and so far its not working. Any input would be great. I just thought that this was weird.

Thanks,
Alicia

Hi Alicia,

Many chiarians do suffer from related sinus issues....I am not sure how to explain  the chiari relationship but, I do know the sinus cavities are in close proximity to all the overcrowding going on as a result of chiari....

With a sinus issue it is very possible to have an ear infection as it is for us to have other ear issues...ice pick stabbing pains, fullness, tinnitus....ect.....

Not sure if that made sense

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

First step is to educate yourself on Chiari and ALL related conditions and then research Drs so you find the right one for you.

May I ask, do you have other symptoms or issues that have come and gone over the years with no explaniation?

ay ay ay!!! us chiarians and our odd symptoms! Alicia dont be afraid to ask a question because it might seem weird or odd or whatever..TRUST US!! I once asked an embarrassing question  ...turns out I got alot of replies lol. To add on to the list Me too! I havent had an ear infection but my sinuses are insane and I too get drainage out of the blue without mynose being stuffed. It doesnt help that I live in San Antonio ..its known for allergens amont other things..but it would make perfect sense that its related to chiari because of the crowding in there.

that is indeed weird....there are times that i bend over and i just get drainage out of my nose...clear not mucusy and my nose isn't even stuffed...it's so weird...i'm at the point of just saying whatever with it. lol...i feel like a hypochondriac at times with these little things that seem odd but then when others say the same thing it's not odd at all...i wish there was a textbook that had every little thing about chiari in it...what the odd symptoms are and little things like drainage from ones nose that is not sick and how they all play together....ONE DAY though....one sweet day all this will be figured out.

that is indeed the million dollar question...but let me tell u this while in ICU my sinuses started draining so badly...I said something and they all said ....no, u r confused, it is not wet, it is cold from the oxygen....ok...so while in the hosp....off oxygen, I still had this....again, I was told....no.....and after being home for a while my PCP was going to do a test to see if it was a CSF leak...as it persisted.....well, I could not get enuff to drain into a cup, but the nasal spray I was given worked wonders.....so, y were my sinuses draining after the surgery...y did I have all these sinus issues.....why is it listed on most chiari symptom lists.....lol....

I wear a scarf year round...people laugh but I don't care...never put sinus and ear infections together with chiari....the drs always played my constant ear infections and constant sinus infections to my immune deficiency....why is it that sinus/ear infectinos go hand in hand with chiari?

I never had ear infections as a child, but sis notice as I got older I was having more ear pains....one dr I saw also mentioned Menieres for me as well...and I have heard several get this as a misdx....so, it is possible that it is not Menieres, and possible it is....???

I find I need a scarf on a windy day or my ears hurt.....very odd.......neone else?

Thanks for the answers, I just felt silly going to the dr.'s being told I had an ear infection at 37. The dr. said that isnt not that common to have one as an adult. I also have the pain, pressure and fullness thats why they thought I had menieres. (cant spell that). I do understand what you mean selma thanks for your help as well. I hope it clears up cause there sure not fun. thanks to the both of you!!!  :D

I have wondered the same thing myself. I am 37 also and a couple of years ago I got a bad ear infection and thought it was odd. A couple of months later I got a nasty double ear infection and my right ear has not been right since. It feels like I have fluid in there and it gets really painful, like bad pressure. I have seen an ENT several times and he could find nothing wrong. I was put on Rhinocort Aqua and it seemd to help for a little while but this has been a chronic problem for me. My family doctor did tell me it could be from the chiari. I am going to ask the surgeon when I see him. I hope your ear feels better soon.
