Middle of the night vomiting

My 17 year old daughter who has a chiari malformation will wake up in the middle of the night to vomit.  Sometimes she actually vomits other times she wakes up because she feels like she has to vomit.  Is this something that happens with Chiari?  It's not every night, but is happening a little more frequently these days.

I've talked to her NS and they are seeing her next week, she wasn't scheduled until April.  I would just like to get a few opinions about it.  Her headaches are getting worse, she has them everyday, sometimes made worse by carrying her books and writing notes in class.  She has found a friend that will carry her heavy books to class for her, but there's not a lot I can do about her note taking.

Her NS office has said we might want to start talking about having surgery.

Thanks.

I wasn't 17 when I finally had surgery. I was 49, but I know I also got to the point of vomiting.  Went to ER a couple of times because the HA's got so bad that it made me vomit due to the pain.  Hoping the best for your DD and hoping you will get some answers next week.  Happy to hear your going to the NS.  Wishing you the best.

Hi, my son's main symptom was vomiting...he too would wake up in the middle of the night to vomit...sometimes it was just nausea as well..(night time vomiting was less than daytime)...he had every GI test under the sun...so his NS felt confident that it was the Chiari. Hope this helps.

Hi...nausea and vomiting r not uncommon with chiarians...many have GERD and reflux that may be the cause while others have vertigo which rolling over in sleep can disturb and make one very nauseated to the point of vomiting.

I would get the vertigo in cycles...sometimes for 2 weeks at a time and then not have it for months....

It is best to find out the cause....

Good luck and do keep  us posted : )
