monitoring nerve activity in surgery

One n's uses someone - I can't remember the title of the person - during surgery to monitor nerve activity.  One n's does not.  Is FM's something necessary? Has anyone had experience either way?

My NS used it during my surgery and, to my surprise, my insurance covered it 100%.  Knowing they were monitoring me during the surgery also gave me an added sense of confidence.

Thanks so much :-)   that is a good question :-)   I have asked 2 ns's if they would recommend the surgery for their wife or mother and they have been surprised by my question. I guess not everyone asks those questions...I appreciate your response so much :-) :-)   june

I had Dr Oro and we did use it:) He gave me an option because it is expensive and not all insurance companies cover.  I asked him if it was his daughter would he use it and he said yes.  He said he had never been asked that before.  I was lucky the monitoring Dr and my ins company had an agreement where they accepted the 5k my ins paid and I did not have to pay for it.

I know, just when we don't feel well, we're doing the equivalent of a marathon or a Master's thesis.
Fortunately, others have paved the way...

Thanks so much :-)   I feel like it keeps getting more complicated and I am so weary of drs. Researching,etc. I know others have been down this path and that does help.

  They need to make sure they r not cutting into a nerve as they do this, or pinching ne...nerve damage is not something u can come back from...that is my understanding of it.

My Drs also do  Dopplar mapping....
In recent years, the physicians at the Chiari Institute have been responsible for redefining the clinical features of Chiari malformations, introducing color Doppler ultrasonography as a means for visualizing and measuring cerebrospinal fluid flow intraoperatively, developing a tailored, patient-specific technique for Chiari surgery and discovering the genetic basis of Chiari malformations and associated connective tissue diseases. Currently, the Chiari Institute is compiling the largest and most detailed database ever created for the outcome analysis of Chiari surgery.{http://www.chiariinstitute.com/what_we_treat.html}

Do you know why it is important?  FM was a typo: (  I meant to say "is this something necessary?"
