Post op quality of life/symptom experiences

Hello - I have been symptomatic for 6 years but just recently diagnosed with a chiari 1 malformation and syringomyelia in my cervical spine. My neurologist, who I really like, is recommending a cocktail of medications to reduce my pain and hold off surgery as long as possible. Is this a common experience?  I have not been able to find very much information on long term prognosis, particularly after surgery. Are those of you who are post op symptom free?  Are you able to be as active as you would like to be?  Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum,

I had surgery to prevent the progression of the condition, and that would have been a syrinx forming (syringomyelia) so not sure why your Dr wants to wait if you already have a syrinx...Make sure your Dr is a true Chiari specialist and is ruling out ALL related conditions.. Since my surgery in '09 I still can have flare up of symptoms and it can depend on what I am doing....plus I do have other related conditions that can cause many of the same symptoms as Chiari.....B UT, I am so much better now then before and after post op....we are all different as to how we heal.....

Thank you for the welcome and response. I have tried to search for chiari specialists since my diagnosis and only get neurosurgeons, no neurologists. I feel like a surgeon will definitely see the solution through the lens of surgery only. Any advice on finding a chiari specialist in the Atlanta area?
Unfortunately the only true Chiari specialists are surgeons and they will not suggest surgery unless they feel it will benefit you and then it is your choice...plus they, since they are well informed and experienced will look for related conditions as well.
The only names for your state are listed below....keep in mind this list is not a referral nor an endorsement for those listed, this is meant to be used as a tool to research the Drs listed.

GEORGIA

Dr. Princewill Ehirim
Lawrenceville,GA

Dr.  Vidyadhar Chitale
Marietta, GA

Keep in mind you may have to travel in state or out of state to get the right Dr fot you.
