Sore throats with Chiari

Does anyone else have sore throats with CM1.  I get really bad sore throats, sometimes worse than my headaches.  I just wondered if this was common.  What helps?  Last night I almost went to the E.R.

Hi Royalmom3 and welcome to the Chiari forum.

Those of us with Chiari are prone to not only auto immune conditions but connective tissue disorders too.

In fact I was thought to have Lupus and was sent for more testing when my Chiari was found.

Make sure they test you for ALL related conditions  so you know what is going on and how best to treat your symptoms.

Expect more testing...do as much reading and research you can on Chiari and ALL related conditions and on the Drs that treat it.
If you need names of Drs to research let me know.

And know you are not alone.

I also have chronic sore throats... doctors blamed my wisdom teeth so they pulled them out a year ago.. silly doctors.. i STILL have a chronic sore throat!  Ive never really had it looked into cuz im pretty sure the doc wud just look at me like im a nut! So its one of the many symptoms I just deal with on a daily basis as best I can.  Never was sure what caused it.. but when i found out about chiari a year and a half ago... i kinda just wrote it off to that to have something to blame it on!

When my throat gets sore my neck also is sore and tight... so i usually get the boyfriend to rub my shoulders which seems to help the neck which seems to help the throat... strange. lol

I am also a mouth breather...and found I can actually breathe more thru my nose post op with out feeling like I am suffocating.....but, I am still a mouth breather and I am sure I will always be...but the sore throats were not always like this ...so, I am not really sure.

I wonder how meds affect us too

I also get a sore throat frequently, but I have always attributed this to mouth breathing while sleeping. I sometimes wake up holding my breath or with a terribly dry mouth and throat. I sleep with a bottle of water next to my bed. I started using breath right strips at night and it has helped some, but as I type I have a bit of a sore throat. I am very curious now if there is more to it.

Weird that you mention autoimmune issues. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2012 & cerebellar tonsillar ectopia (Chiari Malformation) 3 days ago. I'm kinda scared & don't know what to expect going forward

Hi..yes, I still get them as a matter of fact....but it all depends on if u also have  GERD/reflux issues that can affect ur throat as well as post nasal drip...

Chiari affects our sinuses as well as our digestive tract...so, there is soooooo much affected .

But chiari can also affect our voice, breathing....so it is important to get to a true chiari specialist if u find u have breathing issues, drop attacks etc....

U need to find the root of ur sore throat in regards to chiari...is it reflux or PND, ...or just plain ole chiari.....then u will better be able to know what might help.
