Stupid things Chiarians should NOT do

We're all still learning. Four mos post op I'm definately still learning. So I thought perhaps it would be helpful to start a thread on "Things All Chiarians Should Not Do" Here is a start:

1.> Do not stand on your head even if it is to demostrate how to do it to your children.

Good to hear from you. When I first came on this list last year your comments were some of the first that were read.

I don't really like the sound of the two year report, but hey life is better than being a worms feast.

Hello all. I haven't been on in a while - used to be on here all the time. Hopefully I can get back to it.

I'm almost 2 years post-op and still have all these annoying days. People will ask how I'm doing (even Drs at appointments) and I'll say "fine". Fortunately, my wife is usually there and corrects me and tells the doctor how I've really been.

As I was reading this, I had to share several of these stories with my wife; so many of them hits the nail on the head . . .oh and in the same vein, don't try construction work and nail a nail thats over your head!

Don't think you can repaint your daughters room when you are like 3 weeks post-op.  Even though you got hubby's help, I still ended back in the hospital for like 4 days...

Well here's one that I am trying not to do right now...

Do NOT berate yourself b/c you have such a bad memory that you forget to do Valentine's cards with your son even after repeated reminders...and then he ends up being the only one in the class without them...

As I am apologizing over and over he is telling me it is ok...and that he loves me :)

DO NOT try and move furniture, including sofas, chairs, wardrobes, dressers,(even if they are empty) while the plastic mover things are good, you must remember at some point you will still have to pick it up to get it over a doorway or something....

...I too learned this the hard way and paid for it, for about 3 weeks...

Pre and post op, I think many of those are true for all of us! Teaching middle school and having little ones at home, I ALWAYS am looking over my shoulder too fast, or changing direction on a dime...THAT'S A BIG NO NO! I have been taking muscle relaxers like crazy when I get home from school...maybe glasses with rear view mirrors?

Overconfidence is a real B*!!! It's hard to know anything...just know that you will always be thinking "I shouldn't have done that" every day of your life! And while surgery makes things better, you are all correct -- nothing is ever normal again.

Never lift a squirmy child...or ANY child, for that matter! Mine are learning to calm down and they know they have to wait until I sit so they can crawl into my lap :)

While it's fun to share the things we shouldn't do, REMEMBER there are so many things we still can do if we are careful! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

That is my problem exactly! When feeling well I'll go ahead and do something that 'I' feel is within reason. Sometimes I get away with it others we spend days recouping.

To me that is the frustrating part of Chiari. You never seem to really know what your personal limits are for that day. But life goes on and we learn as we go.

Know your limits and stay well within them, I don't suffer all my symptoms at the same time and forget myself if I am feeling well.....

Dont try to do Pilates where you have to hold both your legs and head up while kicking your legs in the air - yea I'm still four days later cursing myself.

Don't try and do a huge stretch...you know the kind..like when you get out of bed in the morning..

If you use a gym ball...make sure you have both feet firmly planted on the ground LOL (this one might be from personal experience...)

6.> Also, do not allow others to dictate to you what 'is' or 'is not' normal.

Yes, selma my sis, the nail has been hit on the head. And really that was my intention with this thread. Looking for a sort of "I know you used to do this, but remember to do it now is not smart." list if that makes sense. I know that me personally wow my list is growing day by day. Fortunately, day by day I'm learning 'don't do that again' as well. But maybe the more we share the can nots it will save future chiarians a bit of pain.

DO NOT try to move the Total Gym by yourself! Even if you have to wait 8 hours for someone to come home and move it!
