Surgery or no surgery for Syrinx?

I have large Syrinx and it's growing outward from c1 to t3... my spinal cord is stretched like 5 mm at its widest point. These neurosurgeons don't say " hey if you don't get this surgery ........... they leave it up to you and quite frankly I'm scared outta my mind. I'm suffering I can feel pain in my chest , pressure , sweating like crazy, pain 24/7/365..... muscle wasting, weakness, nauseous, fatigue out of this world I've been unable to work for 2years now... but I don't want to wait too long every surgeon I've seen says surgery is my only option....please anyone have you gone thru this??? Is it worth it? Does it get better with or without surgery??? I'm in Philadelphia area... any suggestions on Surgeons??? Dr Eric Zager and Kevin Judy are so far my choices....

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

May I ask, do you also have Chiari? What surgery are they suggesting?

I am up in Allentown, and saw Drs in Philly....and I choose to go to NY to the experts up there....please research the Drs to be sure they are well informed and experienced to help you.

Yes
Dr Zager says it's Chiari based on text but Dr Judy says it's not Chiari and even if it were my Syrinx is do impressive compared to how minimal the Chiari is or barely he thinks it's tethered cord , and recommends Syringopleural Shunt. While Dr Zager recommends Fossa decompression, Dr Queenan at Temple recommends laminectomy and drain or poking a hole in Syrinx to drain... meanwhile I'm deteriorating and suffering... I trust Dr Judy but I don't agree with a Shunt as first option. I trust Penn which is why I like Dr Zager but if the Chiari isn't barely Chiari and isn't the nature of the syrinx or isn't the priority as the syrinx then why do Fossa decompression as if we are treating the Chiari why not go directly at the syrinx... A friend recommended Dr queenan at Temple she actually has bad Chiari and syrinx but she's had 3 surgeries... I'm so confused and frustrated... who has had the same issues? What did you do??? Somebody!!!!!

Well I went to U of P and was told it was my Chiari, but it was above the Dr I saw.....I went to the Chiari INT in NY and was pleased  Uof P said what they did....

I agree a shunt is not the way to go to start off......

Did you have any other testing?
