Topamax 50 mg

I have been taking Topamax for 4 days now. My headaches/ migraine s have come back with a more determination then ever before. Now I have pain in both of my eyes. Instead of one of them. I am also having trouble keeping my food down and what I do try to eat I get full after a teaspoon of food.  Is this normal or should I contact the doctor Monday?

Its uncommon for doctors to travel but he said he was coming down to consult another case so he would also stop by and see me. I'm just thankful for another pair of eyes and someone to advice my pcp. I didn't know the name of the medicine my mom gave me until I stated on Facebook what the neuro prescribed me and my sister made a statement about it and my mother confirmed it. I never take any ones medication but since I took the bus and I hit my head pretty bad I had a splitting migraine and all I wanted was relief. If I knew the name or remembered the name of the med I would of have forwarned the neuro before he even prescribed them to me! But now that I know the name of the med I can now tell the doctor and stay away from topamax. As I dont want to have another episode as last time. Thanks for ur help.

Ok...never heard of a Dr doing that so that is great he will travel to ur Drs office ....that is unusual .

U really should never take someone else's meds, and I am sure u r aware of that ...as u can not remember much of that time....but it can also affect how ur Dr treats u, since u didn't really know what u took and had a reaction from....

As to what u r allergic to, if u have a reaction to a med, then u should say u r allergic so another Dr will not want u to take it....if the side effects are as bad as u mentioned a Dr would not want to give it to u...nor would u want it given to u while in a hospital....so if it is offically on the "allergic" list they will not give it to u....JMHO

I have never been on medication. I have treating my migraines with over the counter meds for 17 years. Basically 10 500 mg Excedrin at one time I was afraid if I continued to do that I was either going to over dose or kill my liver. But as far as I know I'm not allergic to nothing but amoxacillin,  I am currently prescribed 600 mg ibuprofen but I quit taking them because my pain has gotten immuned to them so they no longer help with the migraine.

Last summer my mother gave me two 200 mg tablets of topamax. I was away on vacation and no one would take my insurance in the state of Ohio. So my mom thought well I will give my daughter this and hopefully she will feel better. Boy was she wrong, At first I was fine, then I started to get a warm sensation through out my body, ended up stripping ( which would of been fine if I wasn't sleeping in the room with my two 5 year old nephews), some how I got from the the bedroom through the living room without falling on top of my mom and her boyfriend who was sleeping on the air mattress there over top of the child's gate into the dining room, out the back door onto the back porch . waking up not before any body else did with throw up in my hair and not remembering a darn thing about it, and the sad thing was it was the first time I ever spent a birthday with my older sister I wish I could remember what we did but I can't. I know it hurts her feelings when I can'tremember that special memory but she know understands its from the mmedicine and is trying to piece my memory together for me with pictures. With out the pictures I wouldn't believe I spent my 26 birthday with her.

And to why the NL is coming to visit me instead of me going to him is because he lives so far away. I can't drive for more than 30 minutes, my insurance doesn't cover medical transportation so he made arrangements to come to my pcp's office and have a consulting meeting with me and my pcp and to see where to go from where to go from here. My PCP wants to learn more about Chiari himself as well so when he comes across another patient he knows exactly what test needs to be done and what needs to be ruled out as well before sending them to a NS, like he did with me, this is a learning expierence for him and I.

U will lose weight with TOPAMAX.....what other reaction did u have?

But ur PCP will know and this is y u need to compile  a list of meds u have been on and that u r allergic to keep ur NL on top of what med is best for u to try.

May I ask y u need the NL to come to see u?....

Today went to PCP and lost a total of 7 lbs since my visit to the numerologist last Monday ( 185) now 179. And started taking topamax the 4. The PCP said to quit taking the medicine as I had a severe reaction to it once before.( didn't know the name of it since it was my moms prescription, until I asked her), nuero said to give it time. If it does not get better by next month we will try another medication. But I think I'm going with my PCP on this one. I know he no neurologist but common sense can tell you when someone is having a severe reaction to this medicine. My PCP and I are working on finding another nuero who is willing to come see me on a monthly basis. He thinks he has found one and one that I will like so I am crossing my fingers!

Surgery is mute is u do not have a blockage as surgery is only done to restore CSF flow...if flow is ok, what is surgery for?...it is not to reduce symptoms we only hope with the restored flow symptoms will be reduced...and for many they are....

U deff want to see if u have ne related conditions as well...a syrinx can develop newhere in the spine but most Drs only check the cervical spine for them....and most of the related conditions cause the same symptoms....

Will do. I know I was suppose expect some side effects such as numbness, lack of taste, which I have yet to have yet. I had burning sensations in hands and feet arthritis like pain in joints not being able to close my hands or pick up my dogs ( which Idont know is a side effect of med or chiari). They are tea cup breeds no bigger the five pounds. I love playing with but they think I'm purposely ignoring them. I have been getting a lot more dizzy which I have had before topamax. I just hope to get better so. Can you suggest surgery to your doctor even if you dont have CSFbblockage?

No I have not had surgery due to my chiari is mild according to all three specialist I had visited in the last month. They won't operate unless they can't find any medication that will allivaite my migraines of two weeks straight. Will try the meds for another week but then. He wants me to go up on my dose so I will be taking 100 mg instead of 50 so I will continue with my adjust period and if I dont get better I will call the doctor. Thank you for your help. Besides ibuprofen 600 mg this is the only med I'm taking.

Hi....TOPAMAX is a med that can take 2 weeks for u to adjust to it and it will change the morphology of ur HA's...so that they change is typical...as that is one point to taking it...however, the other symptoms not being able to eat, I am not aware of tho they say u can lose weight on it...I never did.

But once past the 2 week adjustment period the way u feel dissipates and u do feel better.....at least I did and this was after I had surgery...not sure if u had surgery yet ir not.

DO call ur Dr when ever u have what u feel is a side effect from a med....

i think you should stop taking it before it gets fully in your system. i was on it for 4 years, at first it did help, but the last two years i started to get sick, nauseated, losing my bowels, and my bladder, vomiting and severe bone pain an chronic sleepiness, for example, falling asleep while driving an fighting hard to stay awake, while eating-just falling asleep at inappropriate times.i went through a year an a half of  visiting doctors offices and many trips to the emergency room before my doctor finally figured it out...topamax is in that category of medications that even if you have taking them for years, severe symptoms an pain will be sure to find you. my doctor started to ween me down on the topamax until i did'nt have to take it anymore- all my symptoms started to slowly depreciate an final disappeared. so dont take me wrong-some people the medication dose work for them-but alot of other people taking the drug, are going through what i once went through- with out knowing the medication is the culprit causing all their symptoms .....so yes-when indoght

I can't/won't venture to say if it's normal or not but I will point out that it usually takes 6-8 wks for new meds to start working correctly.
Also, I have been on Topamax for years & I can tell you it has not affected me in that manner & I don't believe it is a side effect of the Topamax.
Heads up...a major side effect is taste changes. And the main taste change I have is that any and all carbonated drinks taste flat. So, it has been over 4 yrs since I have been able to enjoy a soda.
