"electric current" in shoulders

This has probably been covered before but I cant remember if it has. Lately (for about a week) i have pain in my shoulders and then all of a sudden it feels like electric current running from one shoulder to the other. Almost like I'm being shocked and lasts only a couple of minutes at a time but can happen several times in a day. Has anybody else had this?

i have a herniated disc at either c4-5 or c5-6, can't remember which off the top of my head and have the same feeling, i think, as you are describing.  the constant pins and needles/just been shot with a jolt of electricity feeling, was somewhat relieved with my surgery.  however, over the past week, i have noticed it sneaking back into my body and life.  the dr. told me he doubted it would go away because of the disc issue in my cervical spine and that down the road, i would need surgery to correct that.  make sure your expectations are realistic if/when you have your surgery.  not everything that ails you will dissappear, but my life quality has been greatly increased as a result of my surgery.  just fyi...

I have had the electric buzz feelings constantly since July.  I was "sort of" tested for MS and have had brain and c-spine MRI's.  MS was ruled out due to no lesions.  I was decompressed in 2000 for a 13mm CM.  My last C-spine MRI which was a couple weeks ago noted low lying cerebral tonsils, 2 slightly bulging disks, slight reversal curve on my c-spine and an 8mm hemangioma at T1.

So what was I told about all this?  Nothing.  The neuro told me over the phone that there is nothing there that should be causing my symptoms (buzzing, nerve pain, vertigo, tinnitus, subocciptital head pain, position headaches..) when I persisted he said I could call my original NS for a consultation, but he didn't think it was chairi either and that hemangiomas cause no symptoms.

He said, "See you in three months".  This is why I gave up so many times on my over 10 years trying to get a dx for my symptoms that ended up being chiari that required surgery.

Sorry, didn't mean to write a book.

I have dealt with this off and on for over 11 years!  It has gotten to the point of being excruciating and unrelentless.  I have had all of the MRIs and was told no nerve root impingement.  However, last year, an ortho looked at my MRIs with me and explained what everything was (all the different shades of grey).  The long and short is that he pointed out that I had a herniated disc that was causing fluid to leak out onto the nerve and irritating it.

He performed surgery in October 2008 to remove and replace the disc (C5-6) and fuse the two vertabra.  The CONSTANT burning and tingling (down my neck, across my shoulder, and down my arm) subsided, so the surgery was partially successful... but I do still have problems whenever I try to do just about anything.  It's as though someone has an electrified hot poker in between my shoulder blad and spine.  Aside from the headaches, I would have to say that this is the worst.  I have chronic pain in my entire spine, my hips, knees, feet... but the HAs and this are what typically push me over the edge.  It is such a horrible feeling!

I, for one, will attest that this is very real!  I wish I could understand the "why" of it...?  I do also have cavernous hemangiomas in my thoracic and lumbar spine (they are described as intraosseous, so in the bone), but am told (like with Chiari, so I don't know what to believe) that these will not cause the symptoms...???

I wish you the best!

Blessings!

Lori

It could be something as simple as a pinched nerve, but make sure you tell your doctor - you might want to call him/her tommorow. Not trying to scare you, but that could also be a sign of damaged nerves. You need to be checked out for syringomyelia and a host of other neurological disorders.

Shannon,

Rachael has also had this.  You're NOT crazy!  It is painful, and, yes, probably nerve pain.  Lyrica and/or Neurontin have helped Rachael somewhat.

I've yet to hear your story...do you have syrinx???  Rachael has thoracic syrinx and cervical syrinx.

We are way overdue on a cup of coffee and a long chat! ;)

I hope you get some relief,

Rebecca
