filum therminale

Why do chiari specialists do not perform filum therminale section on patients with ACM? It appears that this method is less invasive than the typical decompression surgery and proved to "stop and/or relieve" chiari related symptoms. any input?

Hi...not all with chiari have a tethered cord and unfortunately medical boards  do not all agree with the TC release surgery...bcuz  most TC's do not show on MRI's and bcuz they can re-tether.

I have TC and was scheduled for the release and they changed it to a PFD and I did well with that, I still am to look at that surgery if /when the symptoms get so bad ...but, the PFD did help me more then just the release would have.

If the cord is so tight  that it needs to be addressed asap, I was told u would know in 6 weeks post op of the PFD surgery....

But medical boards and ins plans have a say in what many Drs can do, and is y many of the chiari specialists do not  participate in ins plans.....

There are NS's that will do this surgery is it is warranted.
