'Hi...no not too many drs do the removal of the tonsils...most leave them if they r not obstructing CSF flow...or they may cauterize then so they shrink.

The issues u r having may be from ur syrinx...but u really should check to see if ur tonsils r an issue...some have had to have the surgery redone.

U may want to contact a chiari specialist for a review.

good luck

Hi again, I'm not sure whether my tonsils are still at 11mm or not.  I was under the asumption that they couldn't do anything about that and the thing that they did for me was put a graph of some sort in there to keep the base of the brain from going any further down.  I guess I need to get some more answers from the doctors.  Do most people get their tonsils cut off?  My paperwork just says that the tonsils before surgery were 11mm.  My syrinx it said was from the obex to the c3 vertebrae and was 2mm in diameter.  soccero, I'm sorry to hear that you too still have pain after surgery.

I dnt no the exact terms but I no that it was roughly between my shoulder blades. That's where I get so much pain and the doctor said that's because that's where my syrinx is. And yes I've had surgery and the pain still triumphs.

Hi...a syrinx or syringomyelia is a cyst like cavity filled with CSF fluid out side the spinal cord...the larger they get  they can put pressure on the cord and cause nerve damage.

May I ask do u mean ur tonsils were 11mm?...or r they still at that length?

Soccero has had surgery too !!

Hi, I'm glad I have found all of you.  This is more helpful than anything I've found so far.  When I was reading the definition of the post, something sounded familiar to me so I looked up my diagnosis.  I have a slight dilatation in the central canal within the upper cervical cord extending from the obex into the level of the C3 verebral body, with a small syringohydromyelic cavity of 2 mm.  Reduced CSF flow at the level of the foramen magnum posterior to the cervicomedullary junction.  Tonsils are 11mm.  It really hasn't meant anything to me but a bunch of words.  It would be helpful if they would give us this in normal terms.  So are soccero and I along the same line with our conditions I wonder.  I've had surgery already.  How about you? What is a syrinx?

HI Molly...it is when a syrinx forms inside the  central spinal  canal..it widens from teh CSF filling up inside it....I will post a deff -

Definition

Hydromyelia (HM) is a condition characterized by widening of the central canal of the spinal cord. Fluid can accumulate in this space, creating increased pressure on the spinal cord. The term hydromyelia is sometimes used interchangeably with a closely related condition, syringomyelia (or syringohydromyelia). Syringomyelia (SM) is a condition in which fluid collects in the area of the spinal cord that is outside the central canal. The end result of hydromyelia and syringomyelia is essentially the same: an abnormal cyst (collection of fluid) in the spinal cord that is associated with a wide range of neurological complaints and signs. For simplicity, the term syringomyelia is used to refer to a fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord that is inside or outside of the central canal.
