1 Year Old Developmental & Eating Question

Hi,  My 12 1/2 month old  second son can't sit up on his own, does not crawl, does not pull up, does not walk and will not and cares not to eat.  He can sit on his own when placed in a seated position and occasionally will scoot on his bottom a little.  He can stand in a walker or bouncer putting weight on his legs, but doe not walk or take steps when not supported.

As for eating, He has been breast fed and bottle fed breast milk since birth, but since 6 months when baby food was introduced, he does not care to eat food.  We have to force eating, typically getting in maybe 1-3 containers/jars of baby food in a day, along with a few nursing sessions at night.  Since tarting school last week he now will avoid eating and drinking a bottle all day.  He will not take any solids and wont even put them in his mouth.  He only cares to breast feed at night, still waking up 1 or 2 times a night due to hunger. He has now dropped from the 30% in weight to the 10-13% for his age group.  He has also now been placed on iron supplements due to blood work.

Should I be concerned?  Has anyone else ever experienced this? Thanks in advance! Mommy katie

Hi there.  Oh yes, please follow up on this.  I would talk to your child's pediatrician.  You might ask about something called motor planning.  When a child has an issue with this, they find motor skills to be difficult and avoid them.  My own son had some motor planning issues and also would not chew food.  Takes a tremendous amount of coordination to chew food that I didn't realize until my son had difficulty.  Kids that have dyspraxia have severe motor planning.

I would 100 percent meet with your pediatrician and lay this out.  If you are in the US, your son needs to be referred to the birth to three early intervention program.  They will assess him and look at why he is behind in all of his developmental milestones.  Kids do progress at their own rate, however, you describe issues in several areas.  This needs to be addressed.

My son has done occupational therapy to work on motor planning and things are much better.  The sooner you get started on this, the better the outcome.

I, of course, am just guessing----  only a professional can assess and help your child.  But I would indeed make sure to follow up on this as soon as possible.  good luck
