28 months old daughter wakes up screaming

My 28 months old daughter wakes up few time at night crying, speaks in her sleep and most of the time she goes back to sleep after few minutes, however some time she will cry and scream for over an hour and nothing seems to work when I try to comfort her.  It appears to be night scares, is there anything we can do?

Night terrors can be very scary.  Sometimes the child does not see you and looks right through you.  The night terror is a phase and will pass.  What I did was get up with my child and try to comfort her or let her do what she wanted to do.  She would sometimes play with toys, but you could tell that she wasn't really alert.  She did not respond to me at all.  She would eventually get tired again and go to sleep.  Sometimes it was after an hour or so, sometimes it was just 20 minutes.

My son use to have horrible night terrors between the age of 2-3. Some doctors say it is from an overactive mind.  Which is great when their in art class but not at night night time. What use to work for me is PLENTY of night lights, very special blankets and stuffed animals. Also, every time it would happen I would make sure to do the EXACT same thing I had done the last time, same words, same tone, same way of holding him. I would talk in a low, calm voice very slowly. All of his blankies and stuffed animals went to bed with him and I made sure that he understood they were HIS and that they would be there. He is now 4 and when ever he has a nightmare he wakes up and checks for his Mr. Bear stuffed animal who in his words "makes bad dreams go away". He hasn't woken me up with scary dreams in over a year. Hope it helps.
