5 yr old punching girls

My 5 yr old son who is a very sweet child and gets along with all different ages of children and whom I get a lot of compliments at how well behaved he is has punched 2 girls in the face in this same week. The first time all the "aid" at recess saw was him punching her in the cheek which he said that he did because she was trying to kick him. This second time he hit a different girl in the nose causing a lot of bleeding, once again he says because she too was trying to kick him. Nothing in my household has changed, I keep a very structured environment for him although I share joint custody with his father I can't say the same when he's over there.  I don't know how I should handle this. Please help?

Does his father know about these incidents? If not, I think you need to tell him. If he's letting your son watch violent cartoons/tv, or if there is something going on in his home that emulates violence, you need to know.
I wouldn't be so concerned if he hit girl #1 in the cheek, and there was no bleeding and it was a one-time thing for him. But he ended up hitting another girl hard enough to make her bleed in the same week. Kids with good social behavior and very limited aggression don't just up and do that. Somehow the idea got in his head and he put it into action.
Monitor the movies/tv he's watching, and talk with his teacher about how she thinks he's being treated by the other students. And talk to his father.
