It sound like the teacher was trying to protect you child from something that she thinks was dangerous and tried to correct him by putting him on a time out this seems reasonable and she was doing her job, but it seems he did not like the punishment and acted out in an inappropriate way, yes kids will be kids, but even at a young age should not try to hurt anyone. The school should have a book on what the except form a child, parent, and teacher if you child broke those rules and the teacher followed the rule on discipline, then yes he should have been suspended and the school does have the right to do so.
jack, are you saying your son threw something at the teacher? What was it, do you know? Throwing something like a rock or something that would leave a bruise at a teacher is pretty serious stuff.
Personally, I believe your child is young, correct me if I'm wrong, but kids will be kids! If the child was doing something dangerous, then the TEACHER should have TAUGHT your child to not do it!!!! I'm finding in today's school systems that teachers/ staff are just ignorant when it comes to children. If they all don't behave the way a teacher or staff member thinks they should then they are either just removed from school or request the parents to put the child on medications to control "NORMAL" childhood behavior. REALLY ticks me off! Sounds like a teacher/school problem instead of the child's problem!
