Does my son have Asperger's Syndrome?
My son (almost 8), is big for his age (95+ percentile for height & weight). His walk is awkward & he's pretty uncoordinated. He did well with swimming for a while, but is now having trouble executing or sustaining the moves taught to him (I attributed that to asthma or being out of shape, but I'm not so sure). Also, his teacher thought he might have a hearing problem, but his hearing was tested & it was fine. Our pediatrician she suggested martial arts as a way to work on his coordination. At one point, the dr. said that my son seemed oblivious to our conversation. In other words he was either continuing to speak, or blocking our view of each other, I can't exactly remember. In school he does extremely well in math, reads above grade level, & does fine in writing, although his thoughts need to be more organized. Sometimes he talks quickly or I notice he has trouble explaining/expressing himself the way my 6 yr old daughter does. In school, he has some social problems such as self-discipline & getting along with others, although he does have friends. One day for a spring concert at school, he didn't sing along with the others & seemed disinterested. Also, for a recent class picture he didn't smile (maybe one other kid didn't either), but he did for the individual picture. Sometimes when he's excited (e.g. bouncing a ball in store), he makes an unusual repetitive sound. At a concert (which was pretty loud), he was very disturbed by the sound, placing his hands over his ears. Sometimes new shoes cause him discomfort. Could this just be immaturity/no experience?
My son is three and for 2 years he has been doing this thing I don't understand. He has to have something in his hand like a shoe lace or teddy or anything really and he would shake it gently and state at it like really concentrating on it and makes a noise while doing it and the noise is "eeeeeeeeeee. And he could do this all day everyone makes fun of him and a doctor can't tell me what it is.

I'm concerned my son might have aspergers. He is 9 years old. Since he was a baby I noticed different things he did. He always walked on his toes and still does which he is now getting therapy for. When he was a baby he would stay in his bouncer and rock him self very fast to the point on day he broke his baby rocker. When excited he will flap his arms and roll his wrist and bounce up and down on his toes. He will sit on his knees and rock back and forth. He cannot do common things a normal 9 year old should be able to do. Like hold a spoon properly he hold it like a shovel, tie his shoes, ride a bike, he is sensitive to smells and smells his food before he eats. He doesn't like his hair combed because he says it hurts. He can't take a joke for instance if you tell him "go take a walk and get out of here. He will do it. He take everything literally. He is addicted to collecting thing usually things that have to do with sports. He can tell you anything that has to do with the sport, scores statistics. And wars he know who fought who in every war. He is very unsocial , has few friends and doesn't like to be involved in stuff. At school he plays by himself on the playground and rather not be in a group setting. He talks very fast and has a loud excited tone. He always talks about himself or thinks only about himself. He also is getting special education at school for his handwriting. Because he cannot hold a pencile properly at organize things. He always takes everything serious and at times it doesn't seem he has feelings or doesn't know how to express his feelings. Could this be aspergers?

My son is 8 years old now and I am becoming more convenced there is something like Asperger's that he is dealing with. There are many times he seems like a well adjusted 8 year old boy. He loves to help around the house. He likes helping his younger sister, or playing with his baby cousin, but there are also times that there is clearly something that isn't right. As a young child he would have screaming fits. He rocked in his car seat as a baby, but usually just as a past time. He would (seemingly) on pourpose run into things. He may; a thorough evaluation would be needed to make sure. It is likely his condition falls somewhere along the spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Asperger's is one type of Pervasive Developmental Disorder). If he's not receiving any specialized help, it would make sense to pusue this.

He also concentrates on one subject and goes overboard on it. Such as he has about 300 yu-gi-oh cards and he knows everything about thoughs cards and the Matrix, he plays matrix basketball, matrix on the trampoline, Matrix eating etc... He seems to be a little immature for his age and still plays with hotwheel cars and makes engine sounds. He also has a temper problem, he would be so happy he would talk so fast he spits. He would also be at the other end of the spectrum too. I would tell him to settle down and behave, and he would take offense and pout and stay mad for about an hour.

Your son likely displays a combination of difficulties. It is not clear that Asperger's is present, though it may be. It is probable that he displays Sensory Integration Disorder, along with possible Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and perhaps Pervasive Developmental Disorder (of which Asperger's is one type). I'd recommend you seek both a mental health evaluation and an occupational therapy evaluation.

No one will play with at recess and he really longs to play. But he won't play unless the kids play just right, following every rule. He'd rather reject the only opportunity he gets to play, rather than risk a rule break.He goes to speech class twice a week. And tends to whirls one arm backwards when he runs and he spins around when he runs too at times. This makes kids call him weird. When he would get excited he would squat up and down or bounce on his tip toes while shaking one hand at the wrist really fast.This stopped when he was about 5 yrs old.
He still lines up all 51 of his beany babies twice a day and he must complete his ritual or the wrath befalls on us. He become belligerent, aggressive, wild!!!!! And has big trouble falling asleep at night. Cannot tell fake from real. Immature too. I have to chase him around to dress him and such.
He reads well, is an extremely picky eater and has sensitive hearing to certain noises that are low like running water, spray from aerosol cans, my color printer. Hates his teeth brushed, hair brushed, nails clipped, and will gag if any one touches his neck even lightly. Even if he touches his neck, he coughs and gags.

I have the same question about my son although his symptoms are that he flaps his hands when something excites him and he has his eyes wide open as if he he is looking at something also when he watches videos on the tv he constantly rewinds the tapes short sections and plays them back over and over He also has problems in school with behavior and making true friends his academic skills are right on cue for his age although it is hard for him to stay focused very long on what he has to do. My son has been in the special education portion of our school system ever since pre school and diagnosed with ADHT and he's taking ritilan three times a day with some effect on his behavior. My sister is an RN in Dallas and was talking to somebody who takes care of kids with Aspergers syndrome and all my sons symtoms where exactly what these kids had Who do I talk to about getting my son some help THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
