Don't know what to do with my 3 year old.

Hi, my son is 3 years old, he suffers from the worst mood swings, one minute he's nice and caring and funny then if something triggers him he turns into a monster in a second and then back to normal just as fast. Its not typical toddler tantrums, i know this, but its just so difficult sometimes and embarrassing. The main problem is when something needs doing without warning him e.g if we need to go to the shops and i haven't let him know in advance it seems to throw him off, he likes to know whats happening everyday and in what order and throughout the day he will check again and again and ask the same questions again and again and if their is a break in the chain somewhere he finds it difficult to cope with and gets really upset for a while then he just stops and carrys on as normal in a matter of seconds, hes like a light switch. Sorry if this is all abit muffled, i hope to get some replys. Thanks Jenna xx

Hi Jenna,
I was thinking it sounds like autism.  Does he make eye contact?  Does he flap his hands?  Does he have difficulty communicating? How is he socially?  As far as asbergers goes, does he hate affection?

It could also be, like with my son, sugar and red dye sensitivities.  My son gets moody if he has sugar or red dye.  We stopped those things and have noticed a big improvement.  We don't give him juice or cookies not even gram crackers.  We also noticed he has meltdowns when he eats saltine crackers.  You can also look into the Feingold Diet for ADHD.  Even if he doesn't have it the diet is excellent for children with behavior problems.  Always give him a protein with each meal too to keep him calm.

Your son needs what specialtist call "transitional warnings".  Always prepare him ahead of time for events throughout the day.  Tell him what to expect and what will be occuring.

Good luck to you and your boy.  Keep me posted.
