6 year old tells me he hears voice in his head

My 6 year old son keeps telling me that his brain is telling him bad things.  This morning he was upset because his brain kept saying "I'm right" over and over and he says he can't stop it.  He says it gives him a headeache.  He usually won't tell me what he hears because he says they are bad words that he is not supposed to say.  He's been telling me this for awhile and I just kind of tell him that it's normal but I'm not so sure it is???We do have mental illness in our family (bipolar disorder) but I don't believe this is related.  Is it really normal that he would be hearing these things?

He might be telepathic. I had the same thing happen to me when i was a kid exept It was demonic voices i had to overcome. Words like **** god and other things of that nature. Eather that or your kid is telepathic and he hears the thoughts that are around him

Having had a daughter, a husband and a mother in law with bipolar disorder please please please get your son checked and don't let them tell you he is too young. Audio hallucinations can occur with untreated bipolar and current research shows that children can have bipolar disorder. My daughter is 30 and is a hopeless drug addict - and part of the reason is because doctors and psychiatrists ignored my pleas to test her for bipolar disorder.  Saying a prayer!!!

I'm sorry but am i the only one who finds this post amazing. Have you ever seen a movie or heard a news story about people who hear voices. Its never good and always should be treated with urgency. just the fact that your child is having headaches because of the voices should get him a trip to the doctors. I don't mean to sound like I'm apathetic because I'm not but this is a no brainer right?

You may not take my suggestion but just think on it if you are a religious person take him to a religious leader or church prayer never hurts anyone...there may be something going on with him that is out of your control...You may not believe but teach your  child to say JESUS when he hear the voice and ask him does the voices stop. If you have tried everything else try this because this my save your child life
I so wish you had not even suggested that the mother do this.  A mental health professional is far better equipped to both ascertain what is going on and also to give advice.  The child is young and confused. Doing what you suggested is only going to add to his confusion.
Can you tell me what happened with this?
Lynn, only if your worldview is correct.  If his is correct, it could make all the difference.  You don't know you're right about this.  It's possible that his cure is the only possible one.

Sounds like he's showing signs of schizophrenia, and it's NOT normal to hear voices until you become upset. Take him to a doctor ASAP.

Hi!  I am the OP and I completely forgot about this post!  My son is almost 15 now and I can tell you he is completely healthy, mentally and physically.  He was diagnosed with a vitamin deficiency around that time but I don’t know if it was related.  I’m sorry you are going through this-it’s definitely worrisome.  I did have him evaluated to put my mind at ease because we have a history of mental illness but the doctor did not seem too concerned and wanted us to follow up if the behavior increased.  It was random when he would tell me this and it eventually just stopped on its own.  We haven’t had an incident in years.  Good luck!!!!!
Tricci,   Wow, it has been like 8 years....and you took the time to get back to us.   Thank you so much for caring.  I am glad to hear that your son is doing well!
only_girl,  could you please start a separate post and give us a bit more information.  Your post will get lost in all the other comments.

Hi all,

Please keep in mind that the original post was made in 2010 - 7 year ago.  It is highly likely that the OP has resolved the situation by now.

Please take him to a child psychologist and get tested. PLEASE DON'T MAKE HIM FEEL DIFFERENT OR LIKE HE ISN'T NORMAL BECAUSE IT CAN LEAD TO OTHER PROBLEMS.

I also heard voices at a young age (I am 28 now and don't remember exactly how old I was) and my mom took me VERY SERIOUSLY and not 1 day did she make me feel like i wasn't normal. and I was diagnosed with bi-polar with psychosis  and schizophrenia with manic depression and have been on and off medications (as of now I am on depakote 250mg Xanax 1mg, lithium

There are many things that cause hallucinations...it is common in Schizophrenia, but it doesn't mean that a person who is experiencing hallucinatory phenomenon has Schizophrenia.

There are many non-psychotic people experiencing hallucinations that do not need serious medical intervention. Those who can identify triggers, and who understand that what they are hearing and seeing is just a product of their mind, are usually healthy individuals. You would be surprised at the amount of people and young children who experience non-psychotic hallucinations.

Schizophrenia is a thought processing disorder. If you are well enough to comprehend the fact that your hallucinations are not real, you very likely do not have schizophrenia.

I have a family member with schizophrenia. It is not nice. A great person, such a good person and he is constantly tortured. The meds don't work, so he stopped taking them. It didn't start until he was in his 30's, much later than it's supposed to.

There is a strong link between vitamin B12 and schizophrenia an other brain issues. There might be an absorption issue (lack of intrinsic factor in the stomach). sublingual B12 can be tried (you can't overdose on it) just to see if it makes a difference. Perhpas read the book called "Could it be B12?"

A bad chemical imbalance can cause the voices. Have him tested immediately! My brother heard voices until he almost committed suicide. Different doctors told us all sorts of things but a good dose of Paxil was all it took to fix everything. He was completely normal after a year.

You comment does offend me. And since you asked for an explanation why someone would be offended, this is it;
There is a reason, when someone breaks their leg, they go to a medical professional rather than a priest. Just like your family doctor has been educated and trained to heal a fractured bone, a psychologist has been educated and trained to heal a fractured mind.
Certain priests might have some psychological training, sure, but ultimately if someone is religious I'm sure they will seek the advice of their own priest/elder/whatever on their own. They don't need advice in a medical forum to do that. It's not helpful.

To the OP:
Hearing (external) voices is usually associated with schizophrenia, however, in a child that young, it's hard to say whether it's external or internal voices, as others have said. Plus, also as others have already said, schizophrenia usually doesn't manifest until teen years, so it would be unlikely if that were it, though not impossible. I would suggest getting him to a qualified child psychologist as soon as possible.

People my report my comments that is fine with me I only have suggestions but if my comments offend you so much explain why? What is the reason that this offend you so much to suggest something that may help? Society is so saturated with information and suggestion  I know anything religious is stayed away from but I will say what is true im not forcing my views only suggestions..i hope that the individuals get the help they need but know this I will never be ashamed of the name of JESUS . And his name is able to come againt every negative thought or voice or sickness or illness..the name is powerful. Also doctors are a blessing to help up too. I hope you receive the help you need ..sighning off

Again you may not take my suggestion but just think about it. This is a situation that you have little control over because the voices is in the child head. You may not be religious but you can think on it. Tell the child to say JESUS when he hear the voices tell him to do bad things tell him to say over an over until the voices stop. Ask him if the voices stop. Get the child the additional help he needs

I have studied Psychology and this is not an example of dissociation or OCD OR Tourettes. It is Schizophrenia and these children are having episodes of psychosis. They need to be treated by mental health professionals.

My step- son is 5 years old been hearing a voice in his head. I don't know what to do  either does his father. He tells us the voice tell him to do bad things. Like take his poop and  smear it everywhere and pee himself other bad things. I was talking to him to night bc he smeared  poop all over him self and the walls. I asked him why and he to me the voice said to do it. I said does the voice have a name? He said yes and his name was  Pettifer and he is 60 years old. He moved down with us bc he was to much for his mom to handle. We try everything to get him to stop these things. I even walked in his room to check on him and he had my daughter  Barbie  Naked and was doing things to it. I ask him why he said the voice and he has a bad  Brain.

I base it on my own life. And a family therapist I know.
It is hard to be grown up and have very strong negative feelings
AND ADMIT IT.
so often, without knowledge,  these feelings are projected on the most vulnerable member of the family and then everybody else can feel god about them self. This is " making of the black sheep" in the family. Sometimes this family pattern runs so deep and is so  old that everybody have to be crying for years if they EVER ADMIT their true and strong overvelming feelings. Which btw. are often carried through generations. Don't forget the spiritual aspect of life and use every faith method that you feel in your heart will help.

Margypops has pretty well identified the usual cause.  I highly doubt that any medicines or drugs could cause this.  And they would be out of the system by now anyway.
