Lack of focus in 5 year old son

Recently our sons teacher has approached us regarding his inability to focus in the classroom.  She says if given simple instruction, he isn't always able to follow unless repeated.  He is very bright, well spoken, and comes home each day with new information he has learned in school.  The concern is that when he enters kindergarten in the fall, he may not be able to keep up.  He is full on energy, very social, loves to play with others, and I have been told he can be a "space invader".  His teacher states she does not think it is ADHD, but I am worried.  Other than take him to see the pediatrician, what can I do to help?
