Mild ADHD Diagnosis - Meds

Our 6 yr old has been diagnosed with mild ADHD. Per his teacher and the psychologist, he has no other emotional, mental, or learning disabilities. Additionally, he is very successful academically -- in fact, he is above grade level. We are doing behavior mgmt at home and working closely with his school- monitoring for progress. Per his school they have no major concerns at this point. Meds have been suggested as an option, but we are hesitant. Is this something that we should pursue as first line treatment if his case is mild?

Hi I have 2kids w/ ADHD. One on meds, and the other w/out.My 8yr old is on them cause she fell behind in school. My 6yr ols isnot on them cause he is doing fine w/out the.

If your child is doing good in school. I wouldnt put him on them. There are side effects you have to deal w/ when they come off the meds, like mood swings, cranky, loss of appetite, insomnia.

No. As a matter of fact, if he displays mild ADHD and is succeeding in school, it would argue against pharmacological treatment. It sounds like you are adopting the correct approach.
