Oral Aversion

My son is 5 years-old, and currently he has been diagnosed with having oral aversion. My son is not your typically oral aversion case. He has not been through any type of gastro surgery. Once when he was three weeks-old he had a tube placed into his nose to go through his system, because for five days my son was projectiling vomit. In which, when the specialist did the necessary test on him; they all came to the conclusion, he was a healthy baby, who was getting bad milk, because during the time of all of this that was going on with my son. I was experiencing mastitis. I was following the directions of La Leche group to breast feed through the pain and scabing around my nipple area. Well every since he has had this experience, my son has not had the desire to eat "normal". I can not get him to eat meats, vegetables, fruits. He barely touches the food pyramid. My son will eat crunchy types of food. Such as cheerios, cheez-its, gold fish, peanut butter on cracker, granolas. Now he will eat one soft subtance and that is ramien noodles. This has been going on since I have weaned him from my breast. He was 15 months when I finally did so. I am worried about him, because in my eyes he is not getting the nutrition he needs to grow. By some miracle I have been making sure he does not get malnourished, and he is three to five pounds lighter than what his age group is showing on the charts. He is seeing a child counselor, and I keep getting the reply, that it is going take a long while to reverse this condition. I am worried about my son. I do not want him to get sick, or become diabetic from the starchy foods he is eating. I hope I am not the only mother whose child is going through this. By the way, I have presented different foods to my son, and he will projectile the food up, as if he were baby all over again. Then he will spend a week not trusting me with the food issue, and he will refuse to eat anything at all. Please help me, and if there is someone out there going through similar issues with your child. Please give me all the advice you can.
How do I help my son from this condition? I fear if I do not get help now, He will suffer from it in the long run.

I also think your son should be evaluated by a Pediatric Speech/Language Pathologist who has experience with Sensory Processing Disorder and a Pediatric Occupational Therapist with Sensory experience.  If that is what it is (which it really sounds like it is) they can help - it really makes a difference.  Most pediatricians have no idea what Sensory Processing Disorder ( aka sensory integration dysfunction) is and prefer to classify the symptoms as "behavior" problems.

Your son might benefit from evaluations by both a speech/language pathologist (re: oral structure) and from a pediatric occupational therapist (re: sensory issues). At the very least, you will do no harm by such assessments and you may learn something helpful. Many children display very narrow food preferences, and they tend to do fine. Remember, there is no ideal weight for any particular age - it's more a matter of ranges. I'm assuming that when you say your son is below the expected weight for his age you mean that he below the bottom 5%. Is that what you mean? Be sure to keep in close touch with his pediatrician. The most important thin is that he is healthy. As an aside, I'd suggest to you that you won't achieve many dividends from counseling in such an area. Unless he displays other problems, I'd question whether this is a useful intervention.
