Sudden uncontrollable crying - no reason - 8yr boy

HI,
My SOn is 8 and a lovely happy boy but today he is scaring me - he came home happy, and then this evening he has begin crying uncrontrollably - he says nothing is wrong, nothing hurts, he does not know whyt he is crying but he just cannot stop.
My husband and I have tried to be calm with him, have given hugs, distracted him with word searches over the internet, tried chocolate purely as a medicinal tool ( one pice of dark chocolate to see if it elevates his mood )
I am really worried as this is so unlike him.
can anyone please advise what might be wrong?
Nothing has changed - he is really looking forward to the summer hols, no one annoyed him at school today, I am completely lost and really rather worried.
can anyone please help?

Generally, such acute reactions occur when (a) a child is under the weather and physically compromised (e.g., ill, fatigued), or (b) a child has done something that they are upset about and don't want to reveal (it doesn't necessarily have to be something that is objectively serious). Now, does this apply to your son? Obvioulsly I don't know. But, if the reaction is an anomaly and he is quickly back to normal, you needn't worry excessively. Do follow up and ask him again, but don't dwell on it. The visit with the psychologist is a good idea - 'better safe than sorry', as they say.

My son will get like that occassionally or get rather crabby. When we see him getting emotional we make him eat something or drink juice. For him I believe it to be a blood sugar issue perhaps hypoglycemia. I make sure he eats something (protien in particular) every couple of hours. Your son may or may not have this issues also but next time he gets like that have him eat something.
