diagnosis of bipolar after adhd rittalin meds

im curios to get an answer about the side effects of rittalin in a child who was thought to be adhd and after being hospitalized was told he was bipolar and that the rittalin he was taking could inhibit his progress in recovering and or stabalizing his bipolar episodes.
is this truth or can their be treatment to override his years of adhd drugs,or is he perminently effected by this misdiagnosis.  thank you

Dear Ms. Grossi,

The conditions of Bipolar Disorder and ADHD can co-exist - one does not exclude the other. They key is to clarify the diagnosis. Without doubt, if Bipolar Disorder is an accurate diagnosis, it has implications for medication which are different from the medication that would be tailored for ADHD. One way or the other, no permanent harm has been done. Be sure to ask questions about both diagnoses and how the decisions were reached. Dr. KDK
