my 9 yr old son has a very bad temper problem

I am not sure what to do with my son.  He needs help.  I just don't know where to start.  He has a very bad temper.  He has had problems in the past in school where he has destroyed his classroom.  We just reciently moved.  He was good for a while and now he is back to his old ways.  He gets so angry sometimes that i am afraid that he is going to hurt himself or others.  He starts yelling and screaming at the top of his lungs.  I have tried to ignore him but, that dosen't always work.  His father dosen't live near us.  He does have a step-father.  He gets mad over little things.  I am not sure if he needs meds or not.  I am at my wits end with him.  I don't know where to go.  He tells me that he hates me and that he dosen't want to live with me.  Then when he calms down he appologizes and thinks that makes it ok and it dosen't.  Could you help me?  I don't know what else to do.  I don't let him get away with anything either.  He just gets so out of control.

Regarding your son's behavior problem.
I did an interview on my television program with a gentleman who wrote a book about how we can make ourselves healthy and free of disease (quite interesting really).  After we finished taping I explained to him how my nine year old got "ornery" and had a bad temper at times.  I explained his diet in detail, which consisted substantially of bread.
The expert suggested I cut out bread from his diet...and sugar.
He is a different child now.
May I suggest a trial of such practice for your child?

Good luck!

It sounds like he's had some stressors in his life, but in spite of that his temper dyscontrol is way beyond the norm for his age. It is particularly worrisome that such episodes occur in out-of-home settings as well as at school. It will be important to seek help, because your son may well display juvenile onset bipolar disorder, other mood disorder, or other emotional condition (Disruptive Behavior Disorder, e.g.). Seek an appointment with a pediatric mental health clinician (child psychologist, child psychiatrist). It may well be that he will require some medication as part of the treatment.
