Infant not taking milk through bottle

Hello there,

Just wanted to get opinion on this. My son is about 2 months old. He doesnt take milk through bottle. He feeds only through breasts and my wife doesnt seem to have a high production to satisfy his needs. Whenever he breastfeeds,he ***** for about 7/8 mins and falls asleep. We have to try hard to wake him to feed more.the result is he wakes up every hour or so to feed. This continues at night as well.We tried feeding him formula but he just doesnt like bottle. We have tried different formulae, nipples etc .He doesnt even like breast milk in the bottle sometimes and refuses to take it.
This is our first child and we are kind of lost here.So any input is highly appreciated. We will be consulting a doctor also but hearing from people who have gone through this may also help.

as a sidenote our child was born in the 37th week and was in NICU as he was underweight. When we last weighed him his weight was up in the 25th percentile.

Regards

You are doing so good nursing, don't go the formula route!

Suggest changing his diaper when he falls asleep after feeding 7-8 minutes. That will wake him up enough to feed again hopefully for 7-8 minutes more so he is feeding every 2-3 hours instead of every hour. To supplement the breast milk with infant formula, suggest mixing them. Try mixing ¾ breast milk and ¼ infant formulas at first. If he does accept it, then after a week or so, try doing a bottle mix of ½ breast milk, and ½ formulas. If you wish, you can gradually go to a bottle mix of ¼ breast milk and ¾ formulas, then totally to all formula depending on how he accepts it. When you want to wean him off the breast milk you can follow the above also. Try different nipples and the one he accepts the best, only use that one. Hope this helped you.
