6 year old complaining of an itchy tongue?

Recently, my 6 year old has been complaining of an itchy tongue. He says it's itchy ALL THE TIME. He has been gnawing on it to try to scratch the itch, resulting in canker sore/ulcer-type lesions (that also hurt).

His primary doctor had no idea; she suggested Oral Allergy Syndrome. However, his allergist said there was no way that his tongue would be itchy all the time if it was OAS and didn't even consider allergy testing.

Back story: he has an allergy related skin condition (Urticaria Pigmentosa), seasonal allergies, and food allergies (tree nuts only). He takes the adult dosage of Zyrtec daily and uses Flonase to keep some of the allergies under control. Because of all of these allergies, I assumed the tongue issue would also be allergy related (the allergy specialist disagrees though). We have also tried Benadryl to no avail.

He hasn't had a decent night's sleep in weeks. There are days that he refuses to eat because of the itch and subsequent pain from the sores. He's missed several days of school because of this. I'm at a loss. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
