Best place for severe eczema and food allergies

Hi, Im on my second ped immunoloy specialist and he is at the end of his rope now with ideas to help my 4 yo son.  Where would  the best place be to take my son with severe eczema and food allergies?  He is on prednisone and atarax now with minimal improvement.  I live in Southern Cal, but willing to go wherever I can get the best help.  He has a rash all over his body and bleeding wounds all over both hands and feet for three months straight now.  This is the second bout of prednisone in a month.  Already failed antibiotics and antifungals.  Please help.

I was this child too, horrible eczema from birth, NOTHING WAS HELPING, the only time skin was better when my parents would take me for a month or two in a summer to the sea. My eczema was so bad by the time I was 17, I was admitted to the best clinic in my country. On my first day at a clinic I was seen by a Doctor who I thought at that time was at least 100 years old, he took a look at my skin and said one phrase to my parents, move far away from where you live now. I did move to another continent at age 26. My eczema was gone after about a month here in US, NJ without a treatment,  have normal skin since then, Im 55 years old now, always remembering that Doctor and how right he was.

I know you sent this long ago, but I'm just now finding this blog.  My son also has severe ezcema and food allergies.  We didn't find out until he was 8 months old that he was allergic to soy milk and that's what he'd been on, since we found out he was allergic to dairy around 5 months old.  We went to two other DR's until our pediatrician referred us to someone at Vanderbilt Children's hospital, DR Jennifer Ker.  She has been great.  put him through ALL allergy testing, skin and blood and within 2 months his skin looked a 100% better,.  Of course there is no cure for ezcema but you can control it once you find a regiman that works for you.  He still has flares, but NOTHING like they were.

I can't believe I never new of this site before today.  I have two sons with eczema one very severe and the other mild.  Both were born with it.  The one with the severe eczema is 6 now, and we have seen drs and done almost everything.  We are now looking into Phototherapy.  Has anyone considered it or done this type of treatment before?  I posted on FB and many of my friends and their social network friends recommended much of what you all have been doing.  I'm thankful to know that there is this support system.

IT IS SO FUSTRATING BECAUSE I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING AND NOTHING HELPS. WE GOT REFERED TO A HOLISTIC DR AND WE HAVE OUR FIRST APPT NEXT WEEK. WHICH WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY CASH FOR BECAUSE MEDICAL WON'T COVER IT. BUT WE HAVE HEARD GREAT SUCCESS STORIES AND WE ARE HOPING THAT OURS WILL BE A GOOD ONE TOO. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE IF WE COULD KEEP IN TOUCH AND PERHAPS SHARE TIPS THAT MIGHT HELP EACH OTHER OUT. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, BUT ALL MY FAMILY IS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND AT THIS POINT I REALLY NEED SOMEONE THAT IS GOING THROUGH WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH AND UNDERSTANDS. I started searching this site to see what kinds of solutions you moms are seeing for allergies and major skin problems. I have seen a variety of skin issues and have recently been asked my a friend to help her daughter who is in the same boat. I moved awhile ago, and so I'm still building up my network here in Nor Cal to refer her to.
In the meantime, my heart goes out to all of you and your children. I watched my own sister struggle with her first child as she had extreme skin problems, oozing, bleeding, itching, plastered all over her body. She is now 11 years old and totally fine. So what did she do? My sis discovered that prior to giving birth, she herself had a major candida/yeast overgrowth problem along with leaky gut syndrome. That passed to her daughter, and we realized later that's how it started. After doing everything her in laws wanted her to do- trying every steroid and Rx cream known to man, seeing specialist after specialist, and then being suspected to have an immune problem, she started receiving IVs of gamoglobulins? (which was so horrible, pinning a baby down for an hour sometimes trying to get a vein). This went on for 2 years. My sis started being really careful about what she ate, no allergens etc- and even was told to stop breastfeeding, which actually made everything worse. Thankfully she was able to get it back before stopping all together. She finally came upon a natural clinic in provo Utah, discovered her major fungus/candida problem, and likewise for her daughter. Started taking a variety of strong probiotics, eating fermented foods, using homeopathy etc. They made major headway there, and later found a gal who does energy work, and they discovered some major energy blocks and problems there. (negative emotions can and do cause disease- it's a way for our body to speak out and say it needs a change, whether it's subconscious or conscious stuff). With both of those approaches, it cleared up completely by the time she was 3. She has had to continue detoxing through her young life, to get rid of all the drugs and creams that piled up in her system (they even had her on pro topic, which is an anti-rejection type of drug that is used with cancer patients. They KNOW it causes cancer, but gave it to her anyway, hoping it would help). Thank goodness for other therapies, because she is a beautiful girl with beautiful skin now, and their family lives much healthier to this day because of everything they went through.

My friend's daughter is having identical issues to the ones my niece has, and has tried basically everything you all have mentioned. I hope you'll take these links into consideration, and help your children heal. The doc's just know how to prescribe, bless them, they don't know how to heal.

Basically, I truly believe that skin, allergy, attention and many other problems we face are a direct result of bacteria, fungus, candida and a leaky gut. If we don't heal our gut, then everything we eat gets spread throughout our system, which is dangerous. Then the body reacts to almost everything we eat or do, and it's extremely confusing to know which direction to go. Add that to pesticides, GMO's which are hidden in a major part of our food supply- these are things that are foreign to our body, and they aren't FOOD. Get back to basics, healthy, fresh, organic, local food.
As the link below describes as well, if a child is born with a deficient system, or gut, this is where vaccines can further harm or bring on the big problems because it's already weak and struggling. Add the typical rounds of antibiotics kids receive, (ear infections are a classic sign of yeast) and this further wipes out any beneficial bacteria that remained in the gut. 85% of our immune system is in the gut, and with this beneficial bacteria. When it's out of balance, all hell breaks loose. This link explains this phenomenon further.  If you know the source of your problem, you can google it in any city and likely find someone who knows how to naturally treat it with the whole person approach (meaning through lifestyle, emotional, environmental, physical etc). Good luck to all of you, and good luck to me trying to find more nat practitioners here in Nor Cal.
There's so much you can do yourself though. Read everything you can. There is a lot out there we can do to take care of our families ourselves.

Hey I just wanted to add my two cents. When i was 2 weeks old I started developing eczema that just seemed to get worse and wouldn't go away.  Especially as I got older and started scratching it raw. It was caused by fragrance and perfume in diapers, laundry powder, lotions, soaps, etc. So even when you feel like you've exhausted all your choices in trying to find a cause, there really are tons of things someone can be allergic to so don't give up and don't feel you need to be stuck to that list. Also, I find that sodium lauryl sulphate, chlorine, and non pH neutral soaps can aggravate my skin. Hanging my laundry outside to dry also makes me break out in a rash (I assume from pollen).

Wow- I'm reading this forum two years since it was written and boy I really do understand what you were going through-as we are going through it right now with out 2years+ 9month son. We live in the UK.

I just really wanted to ask how things turned out for you?? What helped in the end or is your child still suffering :/

Did you find any answers?

My son has a RAST Ige score of 5000+, apparently the normal range is under 100- so like your son he over reacts to most stimulus-whether environmental or food. Were in a similar situation were his diet consists of what he is least allergic to rather than not allergic to.

It is so so sooo painful to watch his eczema- it doesn't seem to be getting better, only worse. At the moment he is on predisolone which until now I have avoided at all costs :(

I really hope someone out there can help.

As I am reading these posts, I cant help but wonder who these other families are who are dealing with the very same issues as we have. From birth, our second child had very dry, red flaky skin, and awful sores in the creases of his arms and the back of his legs. He was diagnosed with food allergies after a very scary anaphylactic reaction to dairy, when he was six months old, since then we have found he is allergic to Peanut, Egg, Wheat, Milk/Dairy, Tree Nut, Citrus, Rice, Corn etc.... It has been such a challenge for us as parents to deal with managing his diet and skin routeen as well as the social/emotional effects of food allergies. As his mother, my heart breaks for him, I myself have battled with depression since his diagnosis. Some days I feel I just cant cope with it all anymore. Unless you are the parent of a food allergic child, you wouldn't understand what we go through. I hate to think of it this way, but it almost feels like I have a child with a disability. I can never just relax. Food is everywhere!!!! Every holiday, every event. We cant do a lot of things or go a lot of places because of fear of food. I had to quit my job and stay home because our son was suffering in daycare. He is only 3 yrs old right now, and I dread the day he starts school. I know I will be a nervous wreck. My husband and I stopped going on dates because finding a responsible enough sitter and being able to enjoy ourselves without worrying felt impossible. These food allergies really have caused our family a lot of pain. If any of you live close to us in Gilbert Arizona, we could really use some support from others who truly understand what we are going through. A play date would be nice. send me an e mail at ***@**** for contact info.

It's great to find this site and to hear other parents who are struggling with kids with eczema.  My son has had eczema since two months, tested highly positive to dog dander and dust mites.  Our life has been a living you know what.  Anyway, oatmeal bath with olive oil and vitamin E capsules opened up into the bath helps him alot.  Then I immediately moisturize with a mixture of vanicream and aquafor; seems to be the only thing that doesn't burn him.  I too have become frustrated with the steroid ointments because they do not stop the flare ups from coming back.  So now I am going to try eating healthy, natural foods to see if this helps.  Dermatologist wants me to try the clorax bath, but I think that might be too abbraisive for his skin.  Good luck everyone, keep trying to beat this.

My son has had eczema since he turned an year. He is constantly scrathing and making his skin raw.I have seen some improvement over the last two months. I have taken him off all five of his medicines and he no longer has hives. He would always have hives and could not figure out why? The medication. Wow pretty bad if you ask me. I have decided to take the natural approach recommened by Herman who has his own health food store in Texas. It is working. I see results but he is still not completely healed it may take a little longer. I also have been using mannatech products here w/in the last week. It was recommened by Georgie Holbrook. Please check out her story on you tube. She suffered from psoriasis for years but is now 100% free from the disease. I have tied Naet. I saw some results but it was very expensive. I have tried everything under the sun.. Im still gonna try until by Son is completely healed. God has given me the strenght to deal deal with his issues.

Same deal with my daughter. Rounds of all of the above since taking her off breast milk as an infant. She's 3 1/2 now. We're still dealing with severe breakouts, just not as often -- found NAET to be helping. I'm a believer in integrated medicine (Western & Eastern). NAET is along the lines of accupressure. Check into it, the "AE" stands for allergy elimination. Good luck & if someone finds a cure, please post it!!!

i have found that a mixture of aquaphor and hydrocortisone cream 2x a day helps! i have an allergy baby that is allergic to EVERYTHING and between that, singulair at night, zyrtec in the morning and the ointment 2x a day AND clorox bath each night with NO soap. plus an eliminative diet from everything that he is allergic to. ALSO, just because it is not listed on the ingredients list, doesn't mean there isn't anything in it. FDA doens't require ingredients that are less than 2% quantitative within the ingredients. all organic and whole is the way to go if you have food allergies!!!

I am glad i found this website. My son has eczema too , he had it since he was 2 months old and it is mainly due to dairy allergy. He is now 15 months old. The pediatrician just says that he will outgrow it and dairy allergies are genrally not anphylactic. My question is, how do we know when a baby is anaphylactic? So far he breaks into hives and throws up when we give him direct cow's milk/cheese/yoghurt, i have tried very small quantities on him and my fear is that if he can get hives/ vomitting with such a small quantity, will he have respiratory distress if the quantity is incerased? Or if someone is anaphylactic, the quantity does not matter, even a small dose causes a severe reaction?
We just use aquaphor on him, give him benadryl whenever there is severe itching, i use 1% hydrocortisone on and off. I eat a completely organic diet and i am still nursing him

When my son had eczema, his ped suggested extra virgin olive oil. What?! I thought it would be greasy and slippery. But when we were desperate, the eczema, dry, flakes just soaked it right up. It didn't cure the problem, but made it 90% better I'd say. It was still pink, but no longer flaky and dry. and I quit using soap on my little guy in the baths too. Just a washcloth. The soap seemed to make it worse. But in the end, we found out milk was to blame for his eczema.

Have you tried UV Narrow Band light therapy ? Also try EpiCerum cream - non steroidal but works (in our case) just as good if not better, NO MANGOS or any CITRUS fruit for that matter, no shelfish, our 7 year old had eczema for 3 years now, try chiniese herbal medicine - friends at work recommended we are going to try once we have yet another alergy test done.

Wow! I thought i was alone on this! My son developed severe eczema after he was 3 months old- 1 yr now & we about tried anything under the sun. He started out all red & oozing & crusty for months til we found out he was allergic to Wheat, oats, dairy, egg whites, peanut, sesame seed, chicken, pork, cat, feathers... we eliminated the everything but he still suffered from very red & itchy skin all over his body, the face being the most severe. Dermetologist & allergists didn't help much.

We started using Mannatech about a month ago, 10 day trial basis, & didn't realize it was improving his skin. We assumed it was clearing up on it's own, as it does from time to time then flairs for no reason at all. Of course his eczema never totally cleared up but it showed signs of improvement. We got used to the idea. But getting back to Mannatech powder, when we ran out of our 10 day supple, the 3 days post, our son's face broke out in hives. So we know now the powder WAS working! We go do an herbalist to get the powder in once a day packets & mix it with his milk everyday. It doesn't work miracles but we do see improvement! Of all the ointments out there & wet wrapping techiniques the powder proved the most beneficial.

Hope this reaches out to many :)

My heat goes out to you.  My son has the same bleeding oozing raw eczema on his legs and arms.  He was allergic to corn, wheat, milk, oats, dust mites and elm.  WE took him off all the foods, gave him all the ointments and 3 different oral meds.  It helped a little but I didn't see a major improvement until we stared buy organic and all natural foods.  The improvement was amazing.  Two years later he is alot better now. I don't have to buy everything organic but every little bit helps.  He is able to drink organic/all natural milk without any problems.  I keep hhim lathered up with Eucerin lotion too.
Good luck and God bless your family.

I was wondering if anyone would consider NAET for eliminating their allergies. NAET is
Natural Allergy Elimination  Technique. I suppose it falls into the category of Energy Medicine, or maybe hocus-pocus! However, I tried it with my son, and it worked.

Unfortunately, the only thing my son seemed to be allergic to at the time, was grass and cat hair, so these were the only allergies he was "cured" of. The practitioner was very professional, and highly educated. I didn't take my son back to her when he later developed more serious problems (and our insurance doesn't cover NAET), but she really did get rid of his cat and grass allergies, and he felt better overall after the treatments.

Anyway, just wondering.

sorry to hear about the major break out with your son. My daughter is exactly like your son and takes Singular and Ballergy. Also taking two allergy shots a week to try and avoid bronchitis due to her severe allergies.

Defiantley write down everything he touches and eats for a while and see if something is new. Maybe you are forgetting the common factor. Also Latex can be a severe reaction like this one. My daughter is highly allergic to latex as well and we found out by putting a latex bandaid on her. Caused a major blister and redness all around her arm.
