Simvastatin compared to Atorvastatin

I have been taking Simvastatin 20mg for about 2 years, but recently my bad cholesterol has gotten very high to where it is elevated. Now, I admit to not being consistent lately with taking my medication; could this be the cause for my cholesterol to skyrocket?

My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it.

Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol? Because I have had no problems with simvastatin and I'd been 10x's better taking that over this new one that has since already given me problems that has triggered my anxiety.

Lipitor and Crestor are not usually as well tolerated as Simvastatin. In most cases side effects can be managed with changes to dosage. Typically Simvastatin is prescribed at 40mg but can be prescribed as high as 80mg daily but that will increase the risk of side effects. I would communicate new side effects with your doctor but try to push past the first few weeks, side effects should go away but be careful to report new issues.
