Sometimes at night I wake up to a slight flutter in my chest and I am gasp for breath and then go back to sleep.  At times it happens during the day, as if I forget to breathe, or I am holding my breath.  I do snore at night and know about sleep apnea, just didnt know if this required a visit to a heart doctor and/or sleep study.  Thanks!

What you describe does suggest the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.  I assume that the "slight flutter" feels like a respiratory noise, rather than heart palpitation.  If that is the case, you should consult with a lung doctor, also called a pulmonologist, and arrange for a sleep study.
