I was diagnosed with "mild" COPD by my asthma specialist a month ago. I've had asthma since about 7 years old. I am only 36. I have NEVER smoked...even being around it irritates my allergies/asthma. Anyhow, I was only given serial spirometry by the doctor over a few years' time (never once after using the bronchodilator and taking it again as recommended).
Long story short, my mother died of COPD when she was 52 and was dxd at about 40 and WAS a heavy smoker. Due to this and my asthma getting so severe the last few years along with the spirometry results is why he dxd me with mild copd. The only data I have is that my FEV1 has always stayed around 78-79% even with Symbacort and my FEF 25/75 is 48%. I know nothing about these numbers, but I am not sure this is enough to give a clinical diagnosis of COPD? I am so young and this worries me...this type of diagnosis is hard to get off your rec and hard to get ins easily if you have this. I am getting a second opinion soon, and also being tested for Alpha 1 antitrypsin, but the wait list is awhile.
Anyone out there that may know anything about this would be so helpful!! Thank you
