Effect of quitting smoking on COPD sufferers

Googling around I have found a lot of material discussing the slowing of the progression of COPD in smokers after they quit, but nothing that suggests there is a significant actual improvement in breathing, and with it an easing of the discomfort from exertion and improvement in quality of life generally. What effect on symptoms can a typical long-term smoker with moderate to severe COPD expect, say, 1 month, 6 months, 2 years after quitting?
