There are two things you can try. The first is a natural mucolytic (mucus thinner) - vitamin B5. Start with 500 mg. daily. If that works but not completely, go to 1000 mg. daily. The second has to do with an allergy that you might not know you have.. I can often stop my cough with a couple of sips liquid Benadryl. I simply tried it one day and it worked. That suggests that certain foods are irritating my throat - an allergic reaction.
I have much the same problem, Chronic choking cough generally started by a stinging tickle in my throat. I cough so hard sometimes that I gag. Sometimes the cough is productive, a clear mucus, sometimes the cough is dry. Sometimes it starts out dry and hacking and changes to a productive mucusy cough. Most every time I will lose my breath, or not be a ble to catch my breath.Sometimes after one of these spells, my voice will go completely away, or I will croak like a frog trying to talk. I will black out for a brief second or two and get very swimmy headed when having these coughing fits.
I have seen two pulmonologists, a cardiologist, five M.D.s, a rheumatologist and an oncologist. I have had every lung function test known to man, and have tested negative for TB. There is no COPD, emphysema, or lung cancer. I saw an ear, nose and throat doctor and NONE of them can tell me what is causing this insane coughing. I have had it for over twenty years and I quit smoking 15 years ago. I coughed LESS when I smoked.
I do not cough more at any specifc time, the cough occurs morning, noon, night or any time in between. There is no rhyme or reason to this and after twenty years, I think I am losing my mind.
Surely to God there is a doctor out there that can help me with this.. I think I need Dr. House!!!
