It sounds, like your description, to be 'occipital neuralgia'-- a condition where the nerves to the scalp are irritated, causing pain in all parts of the head except the face.  The nerves can be pinched at the spine, or by the muscles that attach to the base of the skull-- or sometimes the nerves are irritated for reasons that remain unknown.  The condition is treated with medication like Lyrica or gabapentin, or sometimes with nerve blocks containing local anesthetic and steroids. The Lyrica dose may need to be higher;  if you have other signs of pinched nerves such as numbness an MRI might be indicated.

I myself had a terrible hit to my head as I got up from the floor. I hit my self on the bottom of my skull. After mri i was diagnosed with 4 bulged disks 3 more serious than others. This happened Aug 08. Then in Nov 08 had another whiplash accident lucky huh.! I am off of work and doing Physical therapy for 6 weeks but I no longer am going to attend due to that it is aggravating my condition. My neuro recommends surgery but is going the conservative to see if it will help. Well he also can not understand the other symptoms such as the burning sensation in the back of my neck such as an open wound. It seems to flare up at any time of day. Now I have Lidoderm patches for surface pain and Opama, oxycotin for deep nerve pain. I am going to tell My neuro on my next appointment about this since My EMG/NCV came out negative for radicolapathy. This sounds like my symptoms and occipital neuralgia can happen from a traumatic blunt hit to the back of the neck such as mine. I feel releived to learn of this now. Since I hit hard I think I may have strecthed out my spinal cord, muscle's, and nerves in my muscles and tendons on the back of my neck. I may get a diskectomy for 2-3 disks but what cure is there for Occipital nerualgia. My doctor does not understand the rest of my symptoms described in my research of this condition. But no permanent cure is explained if any one out there can help it is appreciated.
