I don't know a lot about end stage liver disease, but I had a friend here on the forum (creewoman) who had end stage. The types of complications that she had included her electrolytes being imbalanced with potassium too high or too low. Lactulose, hydration, and proper nutrition are very critical for esld. The balance is critical. Not enough lactulose or too much water can actually create an imbalance, so it's very important to see the nutritionist regularly and follow the doctor's orders. From what I understand, these periods of HE can be very frightening and can get worse and then improve and then get worse again. It is one of the constantly changing symptoms of esld.

Sorry you wife took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted.
Here is a link to some information on high potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia).
http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/hyperkalemia-causes-symptoms-treatments
Quote:
"If you have hyperkalemia, you have too much potassium in your blood. The body needs a delicate balance of potassium to help the heart and other muscles work properly. But too much potassium in your blood can lead to dangerous, and possibly deadly, changes in heart rhythm."
This is why she is in ICU. She is in the right place. The ICU staff will take good care of her.
The webpage includes other good information on how to keep her potassium balanced.
I hope she recovers quickly and is home again soon.
