Any ideas on how to deal with everything with out disqualifying myself for a transplant. with the depression and the feelings that I let my wife down by being sick and the grandkids I'm 47 I should be here for them and it seems I may not be and being sick all the time  I feel somehow I'm not being fair to them???

I think it is also important to have a support system, whether it's counseling, talking things out with your wife and kids, or a support group.  I think that people who have a support system do better overall with 1) coping with Cirrhosis, and 2) qualifying for a transplant.  Transplant centers evaluate the person's ability to cope with pre-, during, and post-transplant stress, so having the proper psychiatric care, counseling, and supports is actually a positive thing for the assessment.

if I seek help will I get disqualified for transplant?

No, part of your evaluation is an interview with the team psych. They expect that anxiety and depression are a natural response to illness.

you may be offered counseling or an anti depressant. It is not our feelings that disqualify us but how we cope with them. I took the meds and started a light exercise program. another important qualification for transplant is that you have a good support system. You need to enlist the help of friends and family to get you through it .

Hang in there, it is a long road but your patience and perseverance will pay off.

Hi Aritzr,
I am sorry to hear you are feeling depressed. It really goes along with the disease. You really have to forgive yourself and realize your family loves you .
I have found the best way to cope is to pray every time I get negative thoughts. I also take an antidepressant that my GI Doc allows. Hang in there ...Cirrhosis  is a long road but you will make it..
