My sister has end stage liver failure due to Hepatitis C.

The doctors have discontinued most medicines. She is taking a diuretic, blood pressure medicine, and medicine to keep her comfortable. She is having fluids removed every two weeks, last time they removed 9 pounds. My sister is experiencing confusion. The doctors have told her she has one to two years left. She feels she could die at any time. Is she being realistic? She would like to know what symptoms to expect in the future.

Lynn has given you excellent advice.  I just wanted to say you are a really nice sister to try to help her.
Both Lynn and I have been diagnosed with cirrhosis.
I was diagnosed in 2008.  I treated the HCV and I get better all the time.  My platelets have finally gotten up to normal.
If you sister is confused she really needs a liver specialist to help her and to determine if she needs lactulose.
I hope you can find some help for her.  If you let us know a general area others can suggest good doctors for your sister.

Has she been evaluated for liver transplant? Is there some reason she is not eligible?

They cannot predict death at such a long time interval as 2 years. I have never heard of anyone with any medical condition getting a prognosis of 2 years. What kind of doctor is she seeing?

Is she being treated by a hepatologist associated with a liver transplant center? They are best equipped to treat a patient with advanced liver disease. Really in her condition she must be seen by this type of doctor.

The confusion is possible hepatic encephalopathy is she being treated for this? If it is HE she should be receiving Lactulose to help with her symptoms.

Why are they not treating her hep c? There are new medicines that can cure hep c even in her condition. Then when she is transplanted the hep c will be gone and cannot infect her new liver.

Please get her to a hepatologist associated with a transplant center they will know  best what to do and provide counseling about what to expect from here and what here options are.
