Cirrhosis of the liver is the last stage of liver disease. It typically take 20 to 40 years of continual damage to the liver to develop cirrhosis. The most common cause of cirrhosis in the United States if chronic hepatitis C infection. Which is why most people with cirrhosis are baby boomers who have been infected with hepatitis C from many decades before discovering they have developed cirrhosis. This is why it is recommend for all baby boomer to be tested for infection of hepatitis C and if infected, treated before they develop liver failure.
There are also number of other causes of cirrhosis as well, all of which can be easily detected using simple blood tests.
Since cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease, when most of the liver cells have been so damaged that they are non-functioning scar tissue, it is an easy disease for a good doctor to diagnose. A simple physical exam can in most cases find one of the many signs of cirrhosis and confirmation of suspected cirrhosis can be assured with a few further tests that any doctor can order.
Cirrhosis of the liver is not something thing that can happen over night for no reason nor is it a difficult disease to diagnose.
