3- Is the liver will recover to be normal ?
If his disease can be controlled with treatment before it becomes irreversible (decompensated) than his liver may be able to recover to some degree but he will always have Wilson Disease and need to be on treatment to prevent further liver damage..
Sorry to butt in but this is incorrect. If its F4 Fibrosis it is NOT reversible, compensated and decompensated Cirrhosis are there forever. But further damage may be prevented by stopping the cause.
Hi. Thanks for writing. I hope I can help at least to some degree.
First, I am sorry to hear that you dad has Wilson Disease (WD). I have known a few liver transplant patients who also have had Wilson disease and needed liver transplants t my liver transplant hospital.
To get the correct answers about your father's health all of your questions regarding your dad rightly should be answered by your father's doctor, as each person's Wilson Disease and liver disease is unique so only the treating doctor knows your dad's complex medical status.
I can only speak IN GENERAL terms then about Wilson Disease and its resulting liver disease.
* First, and very importantly - Wilson Disease is a hereditary disease. This means that first-degree relatives, like yourself and any brothers or sisters, should be screened for Wilson's Disease.
Diagnosing it and treating it early is the best chance of preventing it from advancing and causing its neurological affects and liver disease. For asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic patients identified through family screening, treatment with a chelating agent, such as D-penicillamine
or with zinc is effective in preventing disease symptoms or progression.
1- Is my dad will need liver transplant .
No one can predict the future. It all depends if his resulting liver disease can be prevented from progressing to the point it becomes irreversible (decompensated cirrhosis). Liver transplantation is the only effective option for those with decompensated liver disease unresponsive to medical therapy. Liver transplantation corrects the liver metabolic defects of Wilson Disease and may normalize copper metabolism.
I myself am a liver transplant patient. If your father can avoid transplantation that is obviously ideal, but if not, there is still life after liver transplantation as myself and many friends can attest. Hopefully transplantation is available to him should he need it.
2- Do you think the liver with the medicine will work fine ?
Again each person's Wilson Disease and liver disease is unique and no one can predict the future. Only his doctor how well the treatment is working and your father's health status.
3- Is the liver will recover to be normal ?
If his disease can be controlled with treatment before it becomes irreversible (decompensated) than his liver may be able to recover to some degree but he will always have Wilson Disease and need to be on treatment to prevent further liver damage..
4- What is the probability that D-penicillamine will work good in the case of my dad ?
Again it depends upon his particular case of Wilson's Disease and his liver disease.
5- Any further advice ?
****** Get tested for Wilson Disease yourself.*******
* If you have any brothers or sisters they should also be tested.
* It is important for your father to have routine monitoring of his Wilson's Disease with lab tests and physical exams. They should be performed regularly, at least twice annually.
* Talk to his doctor to learn about Wilson Disease its treatment and the status of your father's condition.
Hope this helps.
Good luck to your dad and yourself.
