Constantly sick college student

I'm now a sophomore in college and ever since arriving at school last year, I've been sick pretty much nonstop. It's different symptoms most times - sometimes just a normal cold and sinus infection, sometimes a sore throat or full blown flu. I am a student athlete who is in very good shape and makes a conscious effort to eat a healthy diet as well as taking vitamins with plenty of Vitamin C. I am sometimes stressed and/or sleep deprived but find these things have little correlation with my getting sick; even when I'm on vacation I always seem to fall ill and am never healthy for more than about a week. I've tried focusing on washing my hands and not touching my face as well. I had pneumonia as a baby so when I get any kind of upper respiratory infection my lung function usually gets pretty bad to the point of having scary coughing attacks with wheezing multiple times a day and needing an inhaler. The last time I was in a doctor's office I asked about this and he said it was just the result of living with people with different germs than the ones my immune system was used to, but I hate to resign myself to being sick nonstop for multiple years until my immune system adjusts. Is there anything else that could be causing this or if my doctor was right is there a time limit of how long this will go on or any way to make myself adjust faster?
