Cough for 4+ weeks

I've had a cough for 4 weeks now and its not showing any sign of relenting. It started as a cold but now its just a cough. When I have a coughing fit it prevents me from breathing and makes me gasp and sometimes its hard to breath when I stop coughing.
Ive been to the doctors twice now and they both seem to think its nothing serious and they stuck me on some anti-biotics (penicilin). Its been 5 days since I took the anti-biotics and theres no sign of improvement.

The doctors dont seem concerned about my cough so I dont know if its anything serious or not.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
KC

Any one of my patients who cough more than 3 weeks i worry about pertussis which is not killed by penicillin

i'd see another doctor as a second opinion

many other reasons than infection for persistent cough:
asthma
GERD (acid reflux)
post-nasal drip from rhinitis
and others, ask your doc
