Why have I had a fever between 100.5 and 103.5 for 17 days in a row?

I had the flu (a long with my husband and children) we were all really sick for about 5 days. Everyone got over it except for me. I don't feel like it is the flu now though.  I have a horrible cough. So 5 days ago I went to the Urgent Care and Dr said probably pneumonia.  She gave me antibiotics, prednisone, and albuterol. It has been 5 days. The fevers are just higher. They dont even get better with ibuprofen.  I can't function.  I have small kids. I feel to sick to drive to the doctor. I need help. My cough is a lot better, my chest doesnt hurt as bad but these fevers are killing me. Any ideas? I've never felt so terrible.

I know you feel too sick to go to your doctor, but at this point it would be a good idea to get some labs and blood cultures. Your doctor can clinically correlate your symptoms with labs and possibly a chest x-ray if they feel it is indicated. A viral infection can turn into a bacterial infection. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

You hopefully got checked out by now and are feeling better. What happens with the flu is that people can get what are called secondary infections.  That includes anything like bronchitis or pneumonia.  The secondary infections are actually the things that make flu dangerous for children and the elderly.  So, you nay have needed antibiotics after the flu.  Hope you are all better now!
