sore throat but not itchy or relieved by cough drops

I had a cold but it's been two and a half weeks. I still have congestion in my nose but nothing more than a bother. What concerns me is my throat!! It's not ichy, or scratchy like most cold related throats are. Cough drops, warm liquids, the throat spray, gargling things, nothing is helping because it's not like that. It hurts so bad to swallow, cough, yawn and sneeze. I've gone to the doctor twice since i've been sick and they just said allergies, it'll clear up with four weeks. I am miserable and waking up in the middle of the night though. I had sore teeth, ear aches, and even bloodshot eyes for a few days but the congested nose and the incredibly sore throat is all that's left! I don't know what to do about my throat! I can't sleep or even swallow!

Also, besides pus, do you have a high fever? Any swollen lymph nodes? You can get a strep test at CVS pharmacy as they have a physician assistant there if you don't want to go to the doctor. It is better to go to the doctor for a strep test though because sometimes you can get false negatives from the strep test. But it is fairly accurate. If it is negative the doctor can send it for culture. I don't know if CVS will do that. It is a thought. Usually you don't have all the other symptoms except pain fever and pus and possible rash (in scarlet fever) with strep throat (not the cough, sneezing and other cold or flu like symptoms, but since your throat is so painful I thought of writing again to maybe have you check.

It does sound like a bad virus. Do you have any pus on your throat? If not it probably isn't bacterial. You can try one of those over the counter sprays for the throat that numb the throat. It would be some relief. You can get them at Rite Aid, CVS or any pharmacy. You can ask the pharmacist for the name of one. Gargling salt water (1 teaspoon in a cup of warm water might sooth it about 2-3 times a day). It will pass.
