viral infection

Hi, I had a bacterial throat infection: including sore throat, fever, headache and body aches.....This was before x-mas, I was given Augmentin, which pretty much cleared it up, except my cough and congestion.... After x-mas The cough got worse and fevers, tongue ulcers and head and body aches came again, my Dr. said this time it's viral, so it would have run its coarse, it's been almost a month and still hasn't cleared up at all. I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Disorder.....What's happening????

I'm about 18 weeks pregnant. First it was morning sickness in 1st trimester, then migraine started at week 13, and now adding the flu since week 17... I'm still 3lbs short from my prepregnancy weight. This is my 3rd baby and I literally have not started to enjoy a single day in this pregnancy yet. :(

Right now, I'm waiting at the pharmacy for Robitussin-AC. My family doctor wanted me to take it with me since I'm traveling internationally tomorrow. Will also see my OB before I leave tomorrow to check on baby.

I am sure the baby will be fine.

If you have been coughing a lot, the pain may be due to bruising.
But it is still a good idea to get your lungs checked out.  If you breathe in and out and it hurts as you inhale and exhale, it could be pleurisy.

Regardless what it is, you do need to keep warm and well rested.  Drink plenty of warm drinks.

My daughter in law had a dreadful cough for a few weeks.  She hurt from the coughing and also had a severe ear infection but would not go to see her doctor, despite me "nagging" her.  The worst symptoms are over now.  Her baby is due in March and the scan yesterday showed everything is fine.  There was too much amniotic fluid last time and the baby was a little small.  The daughter-in-law does have to have an injection for her body not to abort the baby because she does have a B blood group.
She has children of primary school age and they are always bringing back some time of bug :)  They have all been ill for weeks and still coughing.

I can't shift any bugs either (I don't have a cough), no sooner you start to feel a little better, then the next day is back to feeling unwell again.  I hate the winter.

The steam inhalation breathing will help and there are no side effects for you or your baby from doing this.

How far into the pregnancy are you?

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks, jemma! It's been going on 9 days for me. I'm not feeling a bit better yet, still full blown cold symptoms, low grade fever and whole body aches. I will see my OB tomorrow for another checkup. I think I might have bronchitis already as my chest and back both hurt so much when I breathe. Just FX I don't get pneumonia and baby is hanging in there okay.

It will settle, but it does take time.

Drink plenty of fluids (read my message to pinkwhalehealthcare) and do steam inhalations as mentioned in my first posting.

Take things easy, keep warm and rest plenty.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and a happy pregnancy.

As a parent it is very hard to see your child be in pain and be unwell.

You do not say how old your daughter is.  If she attends school, it may be better for her to stay at home for a few days so she can take things easy and drink lots of warm juices.  A warm honey and lemon drink is nice and soothing.  She may also like a teaspoonful of honey to help ease the throat pain.

You can rub Vick on to her chest, neck and back to help with any congestion and help her to breathe.  You can buy Vick for children which is not as strong as the normal one.  If she is too young for steam inhalations, you can put a bowl of hot water in her bedroom (make sure she cannot reach it) with some Vick in the water.  This will get some vapour into the room.  You can also purchase plug in decongestants.

A cough is the body's way to get rid of a irritant, whether this is a bacteria, virus or an allergy.  She may have developed an allergy to any animals that you may have or dust mites.    I presume that no one in the home smokes - smoke can aggravate the throat and lungs and cause coughing as well as being exposed to the cold.  Ensure that when going out into the cold, she covers her mouth and nose with a scarf so that she does not breathe in the cold air.

A persistent cough that lasts for weeks (more than 3 weeks) may be due to asthma.  If there is a mucus production with the cough that is discoloured (green), that would indicate an infection and it would be wise to see a doctor to examine your daughter.  A doctor can do a simple breathing test to see if there may be any asthma or refer for a lung function test to be done at the hospital.

Persistent throat infections that cause pain and infections in the tonsils would need investigation by an Ears, Nose and Throat specialist and you could suggest that to your doctor.

Keep your daughter warm, away from school for a few days, give her lots of warm drinks and jelly.  Chicken soup (the watery type with noodles) is great to help with recovery.  Don't worry too much if she is off her food as long as she drinks plenty of fluids.  Avoid milk while she has any mucus because this can encourage mucus.

When she is in bed for sleep, prop her up a little so that she is angled rather than lying down flat.    You can also raise the head side of the bed up a little by putting some books underneath the legs.

If your daughter gets worse and has a fever, it is always wise to consult with the doctor.

Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Sorry you all are getting this. It sounds more like the virus that is going around. My hairstylist is 28 and she had it for 2 weeks. It wasn't bacterial. She has the same symptoms.

Even my daughter is suffering with very bad bacterial throat infection. since yesterday she is getting fever also. Not getting time to take her hospital again and again. I just want to know that how long this cough exists if it is a bacterial infection.

Unfortunately, viral infections do not respond to antibiotics.

For the congestion do steam inhalations.  To do a steam inhalation, boil up a kettleful of water and pour this into a bowl (taking care not to get scalded).  Put some Vick, or olbas oil, or any other menthol oil that you like into the hot water.  Bend your head over the bowl of water and cover your head and the bowl with a towel.  Breathe in the steam through your nose and out through your mouth.  Do this for a duration of 10 minutes and 4 times a day.  If you cannot do it for 4 times a day, doing some is better than none.  You can do this for as long as you need to.

Because you have an Immune Deficiency Disorder, I should imagine that is why it is taking a long time for your body to fight off the virus.

If your mucus does go green or blood streaked or you experience difficulty breathing, do make an appointment to see your doctor again.

Make sure that you drink plenty of warm fluids and cover your mouth and nose when you got outside so that you do not breathe in the cold air.

You can purchase medicated menthol throat lozenges that may help to soothe your coughing.  Coughing is the body's way to get rid of irritants (bacteria, viral, allergies, etc.)

For the sores in your mouth, you can purchase from your pharmacy Bonjela that will help to heal the sores.

As you have been on an antibiotic, antibiotics can bring about fungal infections.  The sores in your mouth may be a fungal infection.  Your pharmacist can help by looking at your tongue to see if it is a fungal infection in your mouth and you can purchase Daktarin Oral gel without a prescription to treat fungal infections in the mouth.

Alternatively, you can make an appointment to see a doctor and ask for a swab to be taken from the mouth to be sent to the laboratory to identify if you do have a fungal infection.  Fungal infections which can occur anyway, are treated by antifungal medications.  Eating natural yogurt will also help.
If you experience itching and/or soreness in your private region, that would need treating with an antifungal cream specifically for that part of the body.  The doctor can also prescribe antifungal medications that are taken by mouth and it will depend on the severity of the fungal infection to how long you would need to be treated for.

If you temperature keeps fluctuating, going up and down, you may have an infection which may be a bacterial or a viral one.  It is still worth making an appointment to see your doctor to check you out.  If the doctor feels it is a bacterial infection, you will get prescribed with an antibiotic.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Well bacterial throat infections  (strep throat) have symptoms of fever, headache and possible body aches, but the bacterial symptoms don't give you the cough and congestion that would be a virus. So I think you had either a virus to start with and or a bacterial and virus to start with that got worse and went deeper into your lungs. Did you notice if your fever went higher or did the doctor listen to your chest after the second time you got this? If yes then it may be a recurrance of the same virus just from having low immunity. So it probably is taking you longer to get over it. If you haven't seen the doctor for the recurrance I would go back to him/her to make sure you are ok.  Otherwise, get lots of rest and hydrate. Hopefully, you will get over this soon. The second fever also sounds like you may have a secondary infection.
