12-year-old son w/ sed rate of 48

My son has had stomach aches for about a month.  He had the flu two months ago.  His pediatrician did an ultrasound (normal) and bloodwork (sedrate of 48).  Everything else was normal. Had x-rays of the chest and lower abdomen.  Normal.  He has a loss of appetite and has lost 6 pounds over several months. He has been referred to a pediatric GI specialist but can't get in until Jan. 20.  Any suggestions or ideas what this might be?

Hi,
Gut infection and malabsorption are possibilities.
Stool test may be done for evaluation.

I forgot to mention that he also, he passes a lot of gas - the smell is horrible. He says his stomach feels better for a short period of time after he has flatulence.  Before he got the flu, he had tons of energy, played soccer, basketball, and Taekwondo in addition to school.  Now he falls asleep doing his homework.
