Several symptoms, but dr did not find anything, colitis?

I have been diagnosed with IBS, doctor is now taking more blood work to check for colitis. I have alternating bowel symptoms from, Dark stools, regular stools, soft, mucous, diarhea, constipation, loss of weight, and am eating most normally, however have cut back on trigger foods. I have 2 days where i am ok. getting by, then bang..i am down for 2 days with food symptoms whatever.. I get tired more easily if i exert myself, and very sensitive to foods. No bleeding that i know of. have had several polyps removed over the years from colon, mother diagnosed with diverticulitis,I am very home bound most of the time. why has this been ruled out..no colitis? I'm about at wits end..;o/ Also have barrets esophagus.

Do i need to see another specialist?

I am on prilosec,and klonopin.

Please any sugesstions would be appreciated,

Hi Snooze,
Weight loss is not a feature of IBS.
A colonoscopy and a biopsy from the lesions if any present would help to diagnose colitis.
What is the histopathological report of the polyps removed?

Thank you for your reply,

The only one in my family with intestinal disorder that i am aware of is my mother. She has diverticulitis. Many family members are scattered through US, or passed.

I beleive i had been checked for celiac disease. Hopefully the tests next tuesday will bring up something that needs further checking. I am contemplating going to see a Doctor at the Cleveland Clinic..one who may be better suited? What is your thought on this?

Thanx much,

The symptoms you describe may be similar to illeative colitis, or Chrons disease.  Was recently diagnosed after a good period of effectively random stools.   Took a very good doctor to suggest the possibility, it was increased due to the fact my older sister was also diagnosed.

Diagnostic procedures include barium scans, with iodine indicator dyes, as well as colonoscopy.  Polyps are farily common in chrons.   Chrons, as well, can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus.

Might suggest the possibility to your doctor, and see what it would take to get a referral to get the checks done.   Another possible check is for Celiac disease, if your doctor hasn't already scanned that.  It's a fairly simple test, a blood serum antibody test.  This can also cause similar symptoms.

Good luck with things.

Hi Ratnakar,

Thank you for the reply!!!

Over the years i had 2-3 precancerous polyps. Very small ones. Last colonoscopy i had 1 removed and it was ok. My stools vary like i mentioned. I usually get no appetite. I imagine that can be due to not moving around/excercise..because of symptoms usually. on good days i am out doing yard work, taking little walks, shopping, or visiting, and church. even when i do get out to do these things i get no appetite.

Is this depression possibly also? They had me on 2 meds and did nothing. Any little changed in diet can debilitate me. My husband and I went out for father'sday and i had very little to eat, being cautious..and was neasueated half hr later..no anxiety nothing, was odd.

I just don't know where to turn. At this time i am on prilosec and klonopin. My one Dr for klonopin..psychologist said i have to deal with IBS on my own no antidepressants. I do not find myself cyring, but do worry as i age and have the intestinal problems, and do miss my son in military. BUT... I do eat!.. just not anything that will bother my colon.

I do hope this helps you,
Please let me know...btw.. This forum is awesome for those who cannot get out like they wish they could!  The Doctors that go out of their way to do this deserve a Gold Star Also..:O)

Thank you,
