Colon Cancer and Stool Questions

I had a basic question regarding stools and colon cancer. I have read that some symptoms of colon cancer are blood in stool and pencil/ribbon stools. My question is, how often would a person have this issue? Would it be daily, weekly, monthly? I assume it also depends on the stage of the cancer, from polyp to tumor, etc. Just curious on the persistancy of this issue.
