About GABA

What is the difference between 5-Hydroxy Gaba and just GABA? I got an e-mail today from my other doc, in Seattle, and she told me to try this for my pain, she said to start with just one at night, to do this for a week, and if I don't have any ill effects to increase to 2 a day. She knows me well, and knows how I can react to things. I tried just plain GABA once, it was a disaster, I felt awful, so I am wondering about this.

The suntheanine was in the calmmind product.

yes, the dose in the supplement is not usually what is needed for results.

Too bad B M is not here. He could educate us.

What was your dose?  It's never done anything for me, nor for anyone I sold it to when I was managing health food stores.  I think one of the problems is, nobody knows how much to take.  I bet bionic man has the studies at hand, but of course he's gone.  The things about studies is, they usually use a much higher dose than what's listed on the label.

I've taken suntheanine and it worked, for a little while.

I took a product called CalmMind. It worked really good. I do not sell it, I bought it at the health food store.

Never knew anyone theanine actually worked for.  The way to get GABA past the blood brain barrier is to take taurine, the amino acid that makes GABA.  But I do know many who've used GABA successfully, so you never know, and you do have to know when to take amino acids, apart from meals.  Tryptophan is also hard to get to the brain, because most of serotonin isn't in the brain, but apparently if you eat a simple carb meal in the late afternoon it helps.  It's all just too odd.

Exactly what my naturopath says...it does not cross blood brain barrier for most people.
- Suggests things like passion flower, l- theanine ,and I read tyrosine helps too- but she has not mentioned it.
  Happy 4th!!!

I took GABA and it did nothing. I read where it does not cross the blood brain barrier. For these herbs to help with relaxing, that is what must happen. Don't know of too many that do. That will be a good research project.

Suntheanine does.

GABA is the body's relaxant.  It is the substance targeted by benzos.  If taking it doesn't work well, you can try taking taurine, the amino acid that makes GABA.

Looked it up on the net -- just google it, it's a product, not a substance.  It's a combination of a whole lot of stuff, including relaxants, 5htp, etc.  Never heard of it, but I suspected by the name it was a combination product.
