Thx for recommendations. Had got a Hashi's indication today, and did a web search which mentioned possible 'fungal nail infection' involvement w Hashi (along w adrenal insufficiency and hypoparathyrodism). Have had a 12 year battle with toes on left foot----not exactly a beach life here in the UK, so stupidly practiced a sort of 'out of sight, out of mind' mentality-- but clearly a missed signal! : )
In many cases of such fungal infections, the
problem is a systemic Candida infection, curcumin 250
milligrams twice a day, and indole-3 carbinol 500
milligrams a day, to protect the liver (talk to your
doctor about your specific case always). Curcumin
has anti-fungal activity as well.
Of the natural treatments, the most effective
seems to be aged garlic extract and berberine.
The aged garlic extract can be taken for years
and has additional health benefits. Berberine has
been shown in a number of studies to have potent
antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal activity.
The dose I recommend to my patients is 200
milligrams three times a day for six months.
(Berberine is made by Thorne Research. It can be
found at www.vitacost.com.) Systemic infections
with Candida can be found in virtually every
tissue in the body including liver, heart, and brain.
The toenail infection strongly suggests a
systemic infection. If so, treating the toenail with
topical agents will never work because it just
becomes re-infected. It is also important to take a
probiotic, which suppresses Candida growth in the
colon.
